So, I admit that I might be out of it. I have had 2 husbands, and a bunch of really good sex. I have never had a hickey. I feel like, if someone needs to advertise their sexual conquests, they are not that good.

Nah, they were just embarrassed for you and didn't say anything. Why would you bring up the fact that a 24 year old has a hickey to their face? They aren't in high school anymore, there's nothing notable about it other than it's trashy.
Please don't tell my 65 year old wife that! Just an occasional nibbling on my shoulder or upper chest hidden by a shirt isn't bad. For her, she likes me leaving one on her shoulder or boobs.
