In my experience women at the gym don't want bothered because they are sick of the neanderthal meatheads drooling on them. I'd have to get a pretty clear sign before I even bothered.
This is my experience too actually. Women like the attention but generally the headsets are on so attempting to initiate conversation with them is difficult without feeling like your disrupting things.

This. I was at the gym yesterday and saw a few guys who tried to approach women and were flat out ignored. Women there usually want to work out and go home.

My experience in people watching has been that everyone at my gym is just there to do their thing and leave. I had a guy ask if he could share wall space with me the other day and he put his headphones back in before I had a chance to ask if he'd like me to scootch over and give him a bit more space. Also had one I tried to make eye contact with outright glare at me. The nerve of me trying to make sure he didn't zig where I zagged with the end result of me beaning him in the head with a barbell!
My gym does seem to have a lot of couples in it. But for the most part, unless someone is there with a workout buddy or a PT, there is no interaction. In fact, if it wasn't for the overhead music blaring, it could almost be mistaken for a library!

Yup this is just how the gym is. Usually you'd think it would be a nice place to meet someone but I have seen it to be the exact opposite.

It really depends on the gym. Some have a more laid-back and social atmosphere than others.

Yeah they like to get checked out a little bit because it fuels their ego but not talked to. I've been ignored before as well. It's hard to know if they're single or not too it's not like anyone works out with a ring on.
I'm not sure what the hell you're supposed to do as a single guy over 35, nothing works in RL at my age except hoping you know someone that can introduce you to someone, and OLD is terrible terrible terrible.

I've never approached a woman at the gym because it's not welcome there.
Outside of university rec centers, trying to ask people out at the gym is considered rude, and you will quickly gain the reputation of a fool.
