As discussed, 50 Shades has little to do with the actual lifestyle and people who are into it.
Believe me, you DO know people who are into BDSM, you just don't know they are into it because most are closeted.
It's a subculture and not mainstream, but it's also not some tiny, marginal population of people. There are thousands and thousands of websites devoted to it and before that, video shops, fetish companies, magazines and networks of people. It's a thing, and it always has existed in every culture, every part of the globe, throughout human history.
