It's not as easy as it sounds to some people, Chow. Human souls are complex and have many idiosyncrasies. Sometimes another person may fulfill some very specific needs and that makes the rest of his/her behavior ignorable or tolerable. It's an addiction. Speaking from experience...
I just said that from a place of watching my mother in abusive relationships.
I remember watching my mom and some guy she was with fight and having it turn physical.
When you're 10 ys old and some dude is beating on your mother and there isn't much you can do really makes you think about things an adult.
Yeah you're right human souls are complex and do have many idiosyncrasis, but as a kid watching that stuff, I know I'd never do that to my kids.
That's one of the many reasons I didn't have kids. Knowing that I could make stupid adult drama mistakes and cause them some serious pain.
Chow, my mother was very similar to yours and my saving grace was my father's good sense. I never wanted children, a husband or the conventional life....flip flops, backpack and my camera were enough for me. When I did have children I realized my mother was a good role model for what I never wanted to be. I remind myself of that everyday...
Yeah, you won't be off the hook any time soon unless you cut her off.
I could never cut her off. The day we met we both knew we would be best friends forever...we just knew. As frustrated as I am, I will ride this out with her because I know she would do it for me but I may become a drinker in the mean time...
I'm getting a little long in the tooth to be having kids.
Ehhh? What are you talking about???? You're a whipper snapper!!
