I did once. Nothing serious happened but a lot of sex. We were physically attracted to each other but we weren't compatible to live together. My buddy's cousin ended up marrying her.
Yes I like Pina Coladas
And getting caught in the rain
I'm not much into health food
I am into champagne
I've got to meet you by tomorrow noon
And cut through all this red-tape
At a bar called O'Malley's
Where we'll plan our escape
I responded to personal ads many years ago. I got one woman who said she responded to everyone. We had a meeting in an IHOP. I brought her flowers. There was nothing that came of it. I got contacted by another woman as well, and we tried to meet twice, but she never showed herself on the meetings (either it was a drive-by or she just didn't show). I responded to a person who lived on Long Island while I lived in NE NJ, and we talked on the phone, but we never met. I gave up after that. I had used the personal ads because my luck in meeting person 'by accident' in person was just as dismal and I didn't think it could get worse. I got more action, but nothing lasting.
PS: the woman I married asked me out when we worked together, I was scheduled to move from the state in 6 weeks, we maintained contact, I moved back, we got married, have a son, and are both graduate level professionals. I laugh about my early attempts at romance b/c they were pitiful and allowed me endurance to wait for my prized wife. And last I knew, I am still her prized husband.

Reason: clarification in reading
How is it any different than a dating site? Actually, at first that's what I thought the thread was about. Ads in papers are kinda outdated.
Nothing scary about looking at profiles online, and responding to inquiries. But a personal ad in a paper, or Craigs list? No way...I'd have no tools to use for screening...no way.
Craigs list - you ever looked at those? My god they're mostly just ads for sex - pretty scary stuff - to me at least.

I'm well aware of what's on craigslist! However, a personal ad in a paper (or even a normal ad on craigslist) is no different to me than a dating site. Granted, less info... Then again, who said the info in an online profile has anything to do with the truth even if it is more elaborate and longer. Basically it comes down to meeting a stranger in both cases. What are your screening tools online...?
