my daughter and her dumass husband just pawned their rings today. Hopefully it's enough to keep their lights on. Their relationship is a whole different thread.

lol I was watching divorce court tv, first time i've seen it but they had this lady who was suing her husband for 6,000$ for a ring that she pawned. She bought the ring herself for 750$ at an auction got it appraised at 6k then pawned it in for 250$.
Well the bad economy is showing people how overpriced those new engagement rings are. Even rings bought from Blue Nile, aren't going to sell for very much on the used market. And the worst losses will be with engagement rings with a poor quality diamonds. Buying new fine jewelry is like buying a brand new car, it's just not a good value and depreciates as soon as it leaves the showroom. And the higher appraisal values are only for insurance purposes. People would get more out of their engagement rings if they had them insured and reported them stolen or lost. Not that I am advocating practicing insurance fraud...
Hopefully this recession will teach people better spending habits.
Well, there are now the equivalent of tupperware parties where people get money for their gold. Heck, my wife took a couple of gold necklaces with unfixable kinks in them to one last month and got $350 for them.

Do you have any idea what was originally paid for those gold necklaces new?
I've heard about the gold parties and on tv, there were several women delighted to get a few hundred dollars for their gold jewelry, however I had the feeling that those pieces were gifts, so that they had no idea what was originally paid for them by their s/o's. It's one thing to sell ones broken gold jewelry for scrap, but if the jewelry is still in good condition, what the gold parties and pawn shops offer for it is really low compared to the original retail prices.
