I have a friend, with whom I've been friends for about 20 years now. We're great friends, but we don't want a relationship (like bf/gf or significant others, etc) with each other. However, we are very sexually compatible and over the years during the times when he and I have both been uninvolved with anyone else, we have a fwb arrangement.
It works out quite well for both of us as we trust each other as long-time friends and we both know there won't be romantic complications. When one or the other of us finds a boyfriend or girlfriend (or in one case for each of us, a husband or a wife), then the sexual relationship immediately ends and neither of us has regrets about it.
So yes, it can be done. It just depends on the persons involved.
Maybe in the rare case, but in everything I have seen it never works out that way over the long term. It is just human chemistry for feelings to develop. Maybe if both people wear a paper bag over their head they can pull it off.
The only way I think for casual sex to work is to bang some random person and then never see them again and hopefully not catch herpititus(nice combo there).

I agree that a true fwb arrangement without strings or complications is rare. I don't know why it works with my good friend and me, but it does.
Hell no, if I have sex it has to be something meaningful not out of lust.
