Researchers from the independent Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life phoned more than 3,400 Americans and asked them 32 questions about the Bible, Christianity and other world religions, famous religious figures and the constitutional principles governing religion in public life.

On average, people who took the survey answered half the questions incorrectly, and many flubbed even questions about their own faith.

Those who scored the highest were atheists and agnostics, as well as two religious minorities: Jews and Mormons. The results were the same even after the researchers controlled for factors like age and racial differences.

Full Disclosure: This atheist scored 100%, but I have to admit that I had to make a wild guess on one question.

Most atheist use to be religious, and didn't just give that up without looking into the subject first...

I scored 87%, meaning I missed 2 questions. One I just didn't know. The other was purely a guess.

A part of this is because many Christians sadly know very little about non-Christian religions. Mormons and white Evangelicals did the best on specifically Christian questions.

I wanted to use the Pew Report itself for that, but it's apparently a very popular page because for the first time ever I got "server too busy" at Pew Research Center. I have that site on "My Favorites" so check the site every day.

No surprise. Every day we see that the religious know the least about their religions.

It's no suprise to me. Greater perspective brings greater knowledge and whole-heartedly embracing any specific religion or admitting they may be wrong is putting the blinders on in a big way.

That's pretty much it. If you were an employer you'd be more likely to hire someone who can think rather than someone who has simply rote memorized.
