No, why?

It's an abbreviation. And one fully observed throughout the world. Yes, it does avoid the use of the word "christ." And that may simply be because many, many people do not believe in this "christ." So what?

The use of "Xmas" is simply the usage preferred by those non-believers. They have just as much right to utilize their term as Christians do to utilize theirs.

I hope you are not saying we should censor that term. To use the idealized "Christmas" just because it is accepted as the definitive term by Christians, is contrary to a lot of non-believers. To censor the usage is merely an acknowledgment that Christianity is the de facto power structure in the US.

You read far too much into my answer. "So what?" is right.

Sorry. I can only "read" what you "wrote."

Considering Mercury Cougar's post, which said:

...along with most of the responses, the clear assumption was that Christians were going to get all bent out of shape over the use of the word "x-mas." Maybe some of them are. Personally, if I'm going to get offended over something, it's definitely going to be over something bigger than that. Call it "Christmas," "x-mas" or whatever. Say "Bah! Humbug!" if it makes you feel better.

Xmas. The Holiday with an X instead of Christ. Christmas or Xmas. Very simple.

Xmas is about money, stuff and commercialism. Thus the X instead of Christ.

Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Mr. Christ. Even tho the date is wrong, but hey, what matters is the event. We really don't know on what day Jesus was born.

So the secular world is into the commercialism of Xmas. Nothing wrong with that. Those who care, celebrate the birthday of the Savior. And all is right in the world.

Peace on Earth and goodwill to all.

I certainly hope so. If no -one complains that 'Happy Xmas' is used rather than 'Happy Xmas' (I tend to wish people a merry Yuletide..."a merry, whatside? ) then you and I shall be quite content.

You're missing the point. Did you read the link? The 'X' is not removing christ from the word. Historically speaking, an 'X' was very commonly used to represent christ, in religious literature.

My whole point with this thread -- since it seems I need to actually verbalize it -- is that when someone uses 'Xmas', it's not an offense to Christians unless they're ignorant. Christians who get offended by the use of 'Xmas' are uneducated about their own history and literature, which of course is nothing new, but it is rather laughable.

Doesn't the X actually come from the Greek rendering of his name?

Yes. Which is why it's so very funny when Xians protest the use of Xmas.
