So I was talking with a relative of Mine this morning that attends a church that holds it's services in the back of an elementary school. She told me that for Easter, they are sponsoring a helicopter egg drop and mailing out flyers within a 10 mile radius in an effort to attract new "contibuters"

Meanwhile we have people in our very own neighborhood who cant afford to pay for their medications and/or feed their families.

I guess my question to you is;

How can a church justify spending this kind of cash on renting a helicopter to drop twenty-five thousand plastic eggs over a soccer field to attract all the neighborhood kiddies and more importantly, their working parents, when we live in a world that is plagued by starvation, unemployment, sickness, poverty, and the like, many of whom are affected through no fault of their own?

After you answer me that question maybe you could take a shot at this;

When a church grows so much in size and increases it's numbers, wouldn't you agree that they become more of a social club of sorts, and lose site of what they are really there to do?

I can't think of anything to justify spending money on things of that nature other than if the event is designed to attract people in the community that aren't saved and then present the Gospel at the end. If there is no Gospel, then it is a waste of money.

Unfortunately, this is the case for many churches that don't have Biblical leadership. And, you are right numerous churches have become the exact opposite of what they are intended for. If ANYBODY in the community can't turn towards a church for help, then the church is doing it all wrong.

Jaws dropped years ago when I told our resort community church
they were little more than a 'Country Club'.

Then when the economy bottomed out
and some of those very same 'church goers' lost their jobs
and ask their 'fellow members' for money to pay bills?
The Pastor had a notice printed in the News Letter
for members to stop asking for the Church to help!

But the Pastor never took a cut in his 50K pay.
Or a cut in any of his benefits!
Which included his continued education bills!

It's painfully obvious that pretty much all organized churches now operate in order to fund themselves, even the vaunted and hallowed RC Church.

They also realize they re losing it as regards the now much better-educated common man, and the majority of our kids from the last decade no longer need nor seek out spiritual guidance since, after all, they have Twitter, FaceBook, My Space et al in which they can question and bounce off others their various personal "spare time" philosophies absent some indecipherable biblical blather that is, frankly, entirely out of touch with today's hyper-digital world and light-speed communications paradigm.

Btw: I heard just yesterday from a digital specialist who works for Apple, talking on NPR, that the e-mail process as we know it now will be dead within ≈2 - 3 years, tops, replaced by a cloud-based interface linked to your phone or other micro-digicomm device. Quite likely.

And God-free to boot! So, for churches, it's down to a desperate congregation-building process, unless they too go full-on digital.

When my mother told my to drink all the milk in my cereal bowl after I was done because kids in Ethiopia were starving, I got an envelope, poured the milk in, put a stamp on it and put it in the mailbox.

I got in a lot of trouble for that. I still don't understand why....

You're correct, though, on your post. I agree. Perhaps because many people expect Christians to be more ethical than others, and actually follow the precepts of Jesus in which he tells people to give away their earthly stuff and their money.

The justification is this event may help attract new members to the church. thereby increasing the church's income.

Why do men drive big Moderator cut: deleted trucks and drive buy homless people without a sideways glance? I don't know the answer to that one either.

Maybe this church does a bit of both. Maybe they do spend money on providing for the needy, and also spend money on fun stuff for the kids too.

Is it possible that churches big or small have aspects that resemble a social club? Absolutely. Do I want my family to participate in a social club where the people have similiar values and goals. Maybe. I am not currently a member of a church, but I do think there are definitely some positives to being a church member.

Are those crying emoticons calling me a crybaby or are they expressing how you feel about the situation?
