It is my contention that "hawyaw" should be translated "became" or "coming to be" or "is becoming" in Genesis 1:2:
Created by the Elohim were the heavens and the earth. Yet the earth
became a chaos and vacant, and darkness was on the surface of the
submerged chaos. Yet the spirit of the Elohim is vibrating over the surface of
the water. (Genesis 1:1-2)
If we look at how this word was translated in the other verses of Genesis we get the drift of what the word means:
And saying is the Elohim, "Become light!" And it is becoming light. And
seeing is the Elohim the light, that it is good. And separating is the Elohim
between the light and the darkness. And calling is the Elohim the light
"day, and the darkness He calls "night." And coming is it to be evening and
coming to be morning, day one. (Genesis 1:3-5)
And saying is the Elohim, "Become shall an atmosphere in the midst of the
water, and coming is a separation between water and water. And coming
is it to be so. And making is the Elohim the atmosphere. And separating is
He between the water which is under the atmosphere and the water which
is above the atmosphere. And calling is the Elohim the atmosphere
"heavens." And seeing is the Elohim that it is good. And coming is it to be
evening and coming to be morning, the second day.
(Genesis 1:6-8)
And saying is the Elohim, "Flow together shall the water from under the
heavens to one place, and appear shall the dry land." And coming is it to
be so. And flowing together is the water under the heavens to one place,
and appearing is the dry land. And calling is the Elohim the dry part "land"
[or "earth"] and the confluence of the water He calls "seas. "And seeing is
the Elohim that it is good. And saying is the Elohim, "Verdant shall become
the land with verdure; with herbage seeding seed for its from-kind and for
its likeness. and with the fruit tree whose seed is in it yielding fruit for its
from-kind on the land." And coming is it to be so. And forth is the land
bringing verdure; herbage seeding seed for its from-kind, and for its
likeness, and the fruit tree whose seed is in it, yielding fruit for its
from-kind, on the land. And seeing is the Elohim that it is good. And coming
is it to be evening and coming to be morning, the third day.
(Genesis 1:9-13)
And saying is the Elohim, "Become shall luminaries in the atmosphere of the
heavens, to give light on the earth, to separate between the day and the
night. And they come to be for signs and for appointments, and for days
and years. And there come to be luminaries in the atmosphere of the
heavens to give light on the earth. And coming is it to be so. And making
is the Elohim two great luminaries, the greater luminary for ruling the day,
and the smaller luminary for ruling the night, and the stars. And bestowing
them is the Elohim in the atmosphere of the heavens to give light on the
earth, and to rule in the day and in the night, and to separate between
the light and the darkness. And seeing is the Elohim that it is good. And
coming is it to be evening, and coming to be morning, the fourth day.
(Genesis 1:14-19)
And saying is the Elohim, "Roam shall the water with the roaming, living
soul, and the flyer shall fly over the earth on the face of the atmosphere
of the heavens." And coming is it to be so. And creating is the Elohim great
monsters and every living moving soul, with which the water roams, for
their from-kind, and every winged flyer for its from-kind. And seeing is the
Elohim that it is good. And blessing them is the Elohim, saying, "Be fruitful
and increase and fill the water of the seas. And the flyer is to be
increasing in the earth. And coming is it to be evening and coming to be
morning, the fifth day. (Genesis 1:20-23)
And saying is the Elohim, "Bring forth shall the earth the living soul for its
from-kind, beast and moving animal and land life for its from-kind. "And
coming is it to be so. And making is the Elohim, the land life for its
from-kind, and the beast for its from-kind, and every moving animal of the
ground for its from-kind. And seeing is the Elohim that it is good.
(Genesis 1:24-25)
And saying is the Elohim, "Make will We humanity in Our image, and
according to Our likeness, and sway shall they over the fish of the sea,
and over the flyer of the heavens, and over the beast, and over all land
life, and over every moving animal moving on the land. And creating is the
Elohim humanity in His image. In the image of the Elohim He creates it.
Male and female He creates them. And blessing them is the Elohim. And
saying to them is the Elohim, "Be fruitful and increase and fill the earth,
and subdue it. And sway over the fish of the sea, and over the flyer of the
heavens, and over the beast, and over all the earth, and over all life
moving on the land. And saying is the Elohim, "Behold, I give to you all
herbage seeding seed, which is on the surface of the entire earth, and
every tree which has in it the fruit of a tree seeding seed. For you it is
coming to be for food. And for all land life, and for every flyer of the
heavens, and for every moving animal on the land, which has in it a living
soul, all green herbage is for food. And coming is it to be so. And seeing is
the Elohim all that He had made, and, behold, it is very good. And coming
is it to be evening and coming to be morning, the sixth day.
(Genesis 1:26-31)
Though I don't like quoting extra-biblical sources, I sense that ones who won't accept what the Bible says might accept what others say. . .
In the Targum attributed to Onkelos in the 2nd century B.C. he translated into Aramaic of Genesis 1:2 thus:
w'aretsah hawath tsadh'ya which is: "and the earth was laid waste." This is an interpretation of the original Hebrew of Gen.1:2.
Arthur C. Custance on page 15 of his book "Without Form and Void" said of the above translation of Onkelos:
"We have here, therefore, a rendering "and the earth was laide waste", an interpretation of the original Hebrew of Gen.1:2 which leaves little room for doubt that Onkelos understood this to mean that something had occurred between verse 1 and verse 2 to reduce the earth to this desolated condition. It reflects Ginsberg's Jewish legend."
On page 24 of the same book he wrote:
"Professor Johann August Dathe of Leipzig published his great six-volume work on the Books of the Old Testament and he translated Gen.1:2: "Afterwards the earth became (facta erat) a waste and desolation."
"He {the professon Dathe} comments on this passage as follows:
"i.e., Waw before 'the earth' cannot be translated 'AND', for it would then refer back to verse 1, where the narrative has 'the earth and heaven were created by God'. Whereas verse 2 proceeds to tell how that the earth, at some uncertain time, had undergone some remarkable change. Therefore 'waw' stands for 'afterwards' and is so to be interpreted, as it so often is."
Yes, there is a school of thought that the creation story is actually a re-creation of the earth after it was destroyed in the war between Satan and Michael.
An interstellar cloud of gas and dust, approximately 50,000 AU in diameter, began to collapse gravitationally. Its mass may have been a few thousand solar masses. The cloud fragmented and one area with at least 1.1 to 2.0 solar masses, continued to collapse. Several mechanisms could have initiated such an event.
Collection of mass from the explosion of a supernova. As the shock wave from the supernova event moves through space a region of higher density is generated immediately in back of the wave front.
Magnetic fields which originate in the center of a galaxy give rise to shock fronts which move through the medium at lower velocities than the medium itself. As charged particles come in contact with the field lines, they are slowed, collecting matter which creates the necessary densities which generate stars.
O B Associations: Hot luminous blue supergiant stars create interstellar winds from their tremendous outpourings of radiation which compress new material to form new stars, etc. This occurs in large, interstellar clouds of hydrogen.
Pressure and density increased. Rotation of the nebula increased. The cloud formed a disk about 60 AU across and about one AU thick. Temperatures rose more rapidly near the center where the density and opacity were greatest. The center of the cloud may have been about 2000 K (3000 °F), while the edge remained cold at about 100 K (-300 °F). Dust vaporized near the center, and atoms became ionized creating a magnetic field which permeated the contracting mass.
Transfer of angular momentum
Duration: Perhaps as short as a few thousand years
Magnetohydrodynamic effect transfers the sun's spin away from the inner to the outer solar system (Alfven-1954).
Early contracting sun had a strong magnetic field.
Area immediately surrounding the sun was composed of ionized particles. Charged particles interacted with the magnetic field so that they spiraled outward along the magnetic lines of force. These magnetic lines returned to the sun, trapping the ions.
The sun was rotating faster than the ions in its vicinity.
The magnetic field lines of the sun, sweeping through the ions tended to accelerate the cloud, increasing its rotational velocity at the expense of the sun's spin. Angular momentum was transferred away from the sun.
The drag effect of the cloud against the sun also tended to decrease the rotational velocity of the sun.
Differences in composition between the inner and outer planets can be accounted for.
The magnetic field of the sun tended to cause more positively charged ions (especially the volatiles) to orbit around the forming star, thus helping to segregate the volatiles from the more refractory materials which condensed first in the cooling nebula. The condensed refractories such as iron, nickel, and silicate grains would no longer have been affected by the solar magnetic field, because they would have been neutral. This matter would have collected into the more refractory terrestrial planets, i.e., the inner solar system.
The volatiles would have remained charged and thus they would have been affected by the sun's magnetic field. These materials would have spiraled away from the sun along the sun's magnetic field lines and condensed much farther away in the cooler regions where the Jovian planets orbit the sun today.
The basic problem of the Magnetohydrodynamic Effect lies with the assumption that the sun's magnetic field strength would have had to have been 150,000 times stronger than it is today. Presently the field strength of the sun is approximately two gauss, four to six times that of the earth's field strength.
Formation of grains and planetesimals
Grains condensed with the composition dependent upon the temperature of the immediate environment. Generally, the denser terrestrial materials formed nearer to the sun, while icy materials condensed farther away.
Grains collided to form planetesimals, small bodies ranging in size from millimeters to 10 kilometers. They grew through direct physical collisions with each other.
Evolution of the planets from protoplanets
Planetesimals became protoplanets once their masses became great enough to possess an effective gravitational field. The ability of protoplanets to obtain more mass was not limited strictly to their cross sectional areas, as it was for planetesimals. At this point the protoplanet population rapidly assembled into the solar system as we essentially know it today.
The sun initiates thermonuclear fusion. Solar wind and radiation swept out the remaining gaseous materials from the nebular disk.
The inner planets became heated and melted. Their primordial atmospheres were lost. Outgassing from these bodies through volcanic eruptions eventually created secondary atmospheres. The Jovian planets because of their great masses retained their primeval atmospheres which are similar to the composition of the present-day sun.

Come on dude we all know super powered good guys with wings and halos that look like Brad Pitt fought super powered badies with nasty pointy horns, red skin, pitchforks and bad attitudes that look like Steve Buscemi were what destroyed the Earth after it formed.
Get with the program and stop making things so super complicated and brainy and stuff. If you want REAL science look no further than the Bible my brother!!!

mikebnllnb, we are trying to have an intelligent discussion here. The Bible does not say that which you infer above. It only tells us the earth became chaos and vacant, not what the cause of that was.

Keep trying you've a long way to go until you get a whiff of even the fringes of intelligent discussion.
You are using Bronze Age thought to discuss a subject Bronze Age man couldn't possibly fathom or have any knowledge of. What in the name of the Great Gazoo is even remotely intelligent about that?
Using the Bible to refute scientific findings is open to ridicule IMO.

You proved that wrong with your open shot of fantasy dust across the bow of the good ship lollypop.
