"I believe this because the book of mormon tells me so".
"I believe this because the book of shadows tells me so".
I'm not trying to be glib, but don't you realize that if Rome had not converted to Christianity as the official religion of the empire, but to Hinduism instead we'd all be debating the role of Krishna or Veda or some other Avatar instead of the Judeo god?
I believe the Bible because I believe in God, not vise-versa. People may think that we are just blindly following a book, and whatever it says we do, but belief in God comes first. I believe in God because of the complete, real evidence of His presence, not because "that's what I've been taught", "that's what's easiest", "that's what my friends believe", "that's what the Bible says", but because of there is enough proof for me to believe.
Why then is Christianity not the major religion in the Middle East and Asia? Are they not as smart as Westerners when it comes to realizing what is true? 1.3 billion people are Muslim and growing. They would answer me the same as you about their religion. I just don't get it. If everyone says their religion, their sacred text is true because of the proof and real evidence they see, the only conclusion is:
A. All religions are true and it's a matter of picking which one is right for you and your society
B. No religion is true and they are tools used to control a popluation and/or provide comfort
I know it is God's Word because it speaks to my heart, is relevant to daily living, and God's promises in it have proved themselves true to me. "Once I was bound, now I am Free!"

That's about as firm a basis as melted jello. Every believer of any faith could provide the same "evidence". What exactly would you call the relevance to daily living- the avoidance of clothing made of two different fabrics, avoiding shellfish, abandoning your family, turning the other cheek (particularly relevant if you are in the military)... just curious.
Christians have this unique ability to have "Faith" in God and His Word. Atheists don't understand this, kinda like we Christians don't understand how/why it is so difficult for you to not have faith
Do you have faith that the morning paper will be on the porch each morning? Do you have faith that your car will start each morning? Do you have faith that your family/friends will be safe throughout each day? Do you have faith that your employer will provide you with a paycheck every week? Just some silly questions, I know - but I'm just hoping to make a point.
