Being a Christian has nothing to do with belonging to a denomination. It has to do with having a relationship with God thru Jesus.
Pick a place to belong and worship and ignore the name on the sign.
FWIW, I am a Presbyterian at heart, am a member at our local Assembly of God and play music at our local Lutheran church.
We are all brothers and sisters in Christ. 99% of all denominations agree on the basics. Mostly do secondary stuff differently, like style of worship or baptism.

Denominations came about for many reasons. The first big split when Luther called out the Catholic Church's corruption and BS in the 16th century. At that time the church was a tool for kings and said you could buy you way into heaven. Luther said nope-that is not what the Bible says.
This could take hours, but let's just say that when it comes to Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, Lutherans, Pentecostals and the other 90% of denominations we ain't all that different in our belief systems. I would venture to guess that North American Indian tribes are more different within their commonality than are Christians within our commonality.
So who started all of these Christian denominations and why?
Various people who lived after Jesus died.

Yes.
Some people are happy to follow the teachings of established religions but others think the established religions are wrong and they set out to form new religions.

and yet they're all preaching from the same book... I often wonder why the disagreement amongst the many different denominations of Christianity and why is it that some Christian denominations say that other Christian denominations are not Christians. I believe, and it's just my opinion, that if Christians get rid of all the different denominations and just became one Christian denomination, it would get rid of all the infighting and they could then turn their efforts to something more useful.

you are correct about the Native Americans, each tribe and each clan within the tribe has its own different way of worshiping the Creator, however the one big differences is that to us it's private and we're not trying to convert anyone to our way of belief and we don't condemn or judge one another because of our different beliefs.

Jesus never referred to his followers as Christians. The term "Christians" was first used in Antioch during Paul's travels. Here is the source for that information:
"and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch."
To be a Christian, one needs to believe in the teachings of and be a follower of Jesus. This is true whether one is a Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, etc. It is also true of one who simply believes the teachings and is a follower of Jesus even if the person does not belong to any denomination.
