Because people thousands of years ago did not have the benefit of the subsequent thousands of years of accumulated knowledge that we have. We are not smarter, but we know more today.
Yea, I don't know if I buy into that...I'd say that most of what we think that we have discovered today had been discovered and forgotten millennia ago...
Because everything I know of history -- which is rather substantial, if you'll pardon the conceit -- says just the opposite.
And there is absolutely no archaeological or written evidence that there was ever a mass exodus of Hebrews out of Egypt ... or that they wandered around a small patch of desert for 40 years without finding their way out even accidentally (much less because of doing something smart like following the coast), no evidence that the Canaanites were brutally wiped out, etc.
No doubt that the Bible had some historical foundation -- much in the way Hollywood makes movies "based on a true story" but ISN'T a true story.
And only the most religiously brainwashed historian actually believes in Adam and Eve, the Great Flood, the Tower of Babel, Jonah and the Whale, and all the other supernatural stories.
It is absurd to think historical records over 5000 years old are still available. That is the weakest argument one can give for not believing in the exodus. They were not looking for a way out. They were going where God told them to go.
The tower of Babel was probably a ziggurate and one is still standing in Erech, a town mentioned in connection with that story(Gen 10:10). Also the tower of Babel is he best explanation for the wide number of languages we have now. You certainly do not have a better one.
It is a cheep, dishonest shot to say the Bible is not true but offer no evidence to support your very biased OPINION. That is the best secular fundamentalist can do. What you accept, you accept by faith alone just like accept what we believe. At least we have a written record written by men who thought bearing false witness was a sin against their God. All you have is an unsupported, biased opinion.
If you can prove our God does not exist and is not omnipotent, you would be right about Adam and Eve. the flood, etc, but you can't can you? Your lack of evidence points too you being brainwashed by the evangelist of secular fundamentalism.
I challenge you to post the evidence you have that disputes the tower of Babel
I have donned my prophecy hat and predict you will ignore my challenge because you do not have any. Now maybe you will realize it.
Well, the definition of "ignorant" is "lacking knowledge or awareness in general; uneducated or unsophisticated".
How well educated was the average person in biblical times?
How aware of the world were they?
How sophisticated were they?
My guess is that by today's standards, they were pretty ignorant, with occasional exceptions. Particularly if they believed some of the crazy stuff in the bible.
You are not very intelligent if you base your opinion on the possibility that since they believed in some god, they were therefore ignorant...

Perhaps that is why there are ancient satellites still orbiting the earth and archeological finds of iPhones, laptops, TV's and radios.
Because it is NOT a character trait. It is a state of knowledge and the knowledge explosion virtually guarantees that anyone from a prior era knew less than it is possible to know today.
That is because what is known today is built on the back of what was known yesterday. It take far more intellect to originate something than to improve it.
Did you know the sons of Adam invented the forge and music(Gen 4:21-22). That is pretty remarkable for ignorant, pre-bronze age people, wouldn't you agree?

How about batteries?...
