If the Bible ever nailed down a prophesy by actually getting specific and saying the words "European Union" in the english language then I'd be impressed. Afterall, if the authors of the Bible are supposed to be seeing real events that will occur in the future then they must also we aware of details like dates, the names of important individuals involved in a prophesy, the names or organizations, etc but they don't. Even religious people argue among themselves about what these passages mean so it's not just me who can't make any sense of them. And by the way, Russia isn't to the north of America, it's on the other side of the world and if you fly there you go over the polar regions and on the last part of the journey you're flying south. Also, American is not mentioned anywhere in the Bible by name and neither is Russia.

Since neither existed as a nation when the Bible was written, how were they to be named?

That shouldn't be difficult for someone who's describing events that won't be happenings for centuries. Why would naming the participants in these events be any more difficult than describing the events themselves?
There are a number of nations that are involved in the union, but only 10 nations are in the WEU. France Germany Italy United Kingdom Spain Belgium Greece Netherlands Portugal Luxembourg.
Associate member countries number 6. Poland Turkey Czech Republic Hungary Norway Iceland.
The observer countries number 5. Aaustria Sweden Denmark Finland Ireland.
Associate partner countries number 7. Estonia Latvia Lithuania Bulgaria Slovenia Slovakia Romania.
Only the WEU nations have been instrument of progress in the European construction process, only the WEU nations have the politico-military legacy is recognised by those involved in the elaboration of a Common European Security and Defence Policy (CESDP) for the European Union. And the modified Brussels Treaty retains its political potential for as long as it remains in force.
As stated in Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia under Participating states.
The Western European Union has 10 member countries, 6 associate members countries, 5 observer countries and 7 associate partners countries. ON JUNE 14, 2001, SOLANA STATED THAT THERE WAS NO FORESEEABLE REASON TO CHANGE THE STATUS OF THE NON MEMBER COUNTRIES IN THE ORGANISATION.
I hadn't heard of the WEU, thanks for the lead, i have some research to do.
I think the most lovely thing is when a sect puts a date for the apocalypse, come out on the day expecting hell on earth followed by ascension but instead find themselves looking like idiots on a warm summer afternoon. Sadly the person who makes the claim pretty much always leaves without even getting beaten to death by a crowd. Heck, not even the reputation of the person gets tarnished when they turn out wrong............repeatedly
I believe they are "literal" events but we must remember this: John saw and related what he saw in the vision according to what was understood at his time. I wonder how it would read if we were to see that same vision today and were able to relate it according to what we know now.

The Bible has been very specific about Israel in the latter days, the future of the Jews, and Jerusalems East Gate prophecy, yet, all I get from most people on those prophecies is silence. I find that people are not impressed with specific facts if those facts do not agree with their belief system. Also, you really need to understand that the direction of your enemy has little to do with their chosen route or travel. The name Jesus Christ is not found in the Old Testament, but 2 billion people call Him Lord because of the Old Testament. (Now, why do you think that is?) I ask that question because once you figure out that answer you might be able to understand how America and Russia can be found in the Old Testament as well.
