There is a rule on the Christianity forum that no one can tell another poster that he or she is not a "real" or "true" Christian.
BF doesn't agree with that, because he thinks only his version of Christianity is the right one. The real one. The one God likes best. He knows he can't say that, though, so asking if anyone can just decide to identify as a Sikh or some other religion is his veiled protest against the rule.
It would be interesting to know if there is a ritual or process that makes one officially Sikh, though.
Thank you for that explanation and I suspected something like that. From what I have read on other threads about Sikhism it is a lot like Hinduism other than the 5 requirements. Based on that I would say no, they are not much into rituals. There are no rituals to call yourself Hindu either. There are no restrictions for instance to enter a gurudwara other than cover your head. No restrictions in most Hindu temples , just common respect to tradition.

I was never able to make it to the annual Diwali party thrown by the Asian-American employees group at the agency from which I retired, but I think that now there are as many non-Indian attendees as not.

There are as many ways Hinduism is practiced as there are Hindus. There is no religious authority to tell you what you can and cannot do. If there is a central belief it is in karma and rebirth, which Sikhism also holds. I don’t wish to divert the thread.

You are mix g up nationalities and religions so badly. Hinduism is a religion, Asia is a continent, Pakistan is a country. After you sort it all out please try and post again

I repeat no religious authority can tell you if you can practice as a Hindu or not. Charles Napier or any of the Brits were no friend of Hindu women. As in any religion Hinduuisms texts contain many patriarchal practices which some follow, many don’t, and more don’t care.

The Prime Directive? They never did an episode where a planet had child sacrifice. I can see Picard saying that they have no business interfering. The Romans were no plaster saints, but they had a horror of human sacrifice, and I can't say I blame them.
You may think that the Brits. were no friend to Hindus, women or not, but I can't honestly condemn Napier for stopping widow -burning. And if you can, I have to say that makes you lacking in morality.
