I think some of the changes in reported numbers of non-religious is the ability to have an opinion heard (moreso than 30 or 50 years ago) and backlash to religious fundamentalism.
These are good things.
cnc, you must be younger than me because I fear that the world will be competing groups of fundamentalists fighting it out for "my god is better than your god" and the rest of the world will suffer.
I appreciate your optimism, but am glad that I am old and will probably die before my feared scenario is all set in stone. At least I hope so.

By the time that happens, I will have found a tolerant area that I can live in (Which I admit will be hard considering my political ideologies.) to avoid persecution.

If you are truly the Aging Hippie than I think we have walked the same road, trail and path for many years. I am one of those full cup people, can’t help it. I want a better world today, and find it hard to wait for the shift I see coming. I always hope they will do something so stupid that even the blind will have to see. (I told you my cup was full.)
As for age, I am old enough to sleep by my self, but still young enough not to like it. I hope to be that way for another 40 or 50 years. LOL

Then we are the same age! I do like this quote.
I don't know that I was ever a "full cup" kind of person, but over the years my optimism has wavered and I'm much more cynical about the world. The past 8 years of Bush and the rise of christian fundamentalism in all aspects of american culture is a great part of it.
I don't know that I could ever successfully live in the US again.
