Can anyone explain to us the phenomena of 'Speaking in Tongues' ? (salvation, hell)

My father and aunt were visiting me from out of state, and although we were all catholics (at the time), my aunt was the only one of us who still went to mass regularly. So, Sunday morning, for her, we all went to mass. Right in the middle of the mass the man sitting directly in front of me started LOUDLY babbling...and that was a good term for it. It certainly wasn't in English, nor did it have the kind of cadence and rise and fall that I associate with almost any language. After it went on for a couple of minutes they stopped the mass and several men literally carried him out of the church. Then they resumed mass.

There are psychological reasons why people do all sorts of things that make them feel good. They don't require help from the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is a STATE OF MIND, not some cosmic spook!! It is the "mind of Christ." If you are NOT in the states of mind associated with the "mind of Christ," you are NOT being guided by His Holy Spirit, period!!! People are wedded to the magical thinking of our primitive ancestors!
If you're asking about the "twenty years ago" part I have no idea. The modern pentecostal movement traces back to the Azusa Street revival of 1906-1915. The charismatic movement is more a 1970s thing where people practiced similar things inside of non-pentecostal denominations. Such denominations (sometimes barely) tolerated this kind of thing because it brought in a different demographic of new converts. It also sometimes went hand-in-hand with other trends; for example Catholic charismatics tended to be associated with the informal mass involving guitars and folk-music which was intensely relatable to young people of the day.

Speaking in tongues can be authentic. But that's left to God and the spirit, and is between them and the person.
It's like a choice of clothes. There's no right or wrong. It's a freedom of choice for the individual, but shouldn't warrant any special attention or significance.

Back when I was in bible institute most of us students attended Calvary Bible Church, Grand Rapids, which was more or less the school's founding church. One Sunday service a rather prim lady in a pill-box hat came in and sat near the back of the large auditorium. She was doing odd repetitive movements which might have reflected mental illness or might have been similar to the bobbing you see some sects do when praying or communing with god. People were sort of edging away from her.
At any rate she was silent until about halfway through the sermon when she suddenly shouted out, "INDIVIDUAL SOULS!" and then started babbling in what might have been speaking in tongues or just simple psychosis -- hard to be sure. As in your situation, some ushers literally ushered her out, thus earning their titles more literally than usual -- though I don't think they had to carry her.
