I can't remember who it was but there was an guy who wrote a book about growing up in the church and being a very good young preacher but started questioning his faith after going to college. He said that some of the senior church members warned him about going and said that college "ruined" many people of faith.

It seems to be going to college has the potential to replace one set of falsehoods to another.
I'm not saying people shouldn't go to college. But it's important to be aware there is a certain kind of conformist groupthink that prevails on college campuses just as there is in fundamentalist churches.

Aside from the course of study, the most important thing learned in college, at least for the majority of students, are critical thinking skills. To address your point, there is a number of people that can be manipulated into what you call groupthink, but these people will always be followers.
