I think it depends on whether you rent from a private landlord or a management company. I would think most private landlords would cash/deposit checks pretty much right away but at my company, where we are taking in 500+ rent checks a month, we don't deposit checks every day & there is sometimes 7-10 days in between "deposit days".
I find it a nuisance to get to the bank. It is not unusual for me to hold the rent check for 2-3 weeks - until I find another reason for going near the bank.
I always go the bank on the 6th... if a check arrives after that... it could very well be the 13th or 14th before I go again.
Check must be good when deposited... it's on me if it takes me awhile to deposit.
It could also be lost or more likely misdirected in the mail...
I've found very important mail in the folds of magazines I subscribed to.
Every couple of years the mail has misdirected one of my tenant's checks.
The last time, I called my tenant to let her know I had not received it... she went to the bank and put a stop on it and gave me a money order... about 6 weeks later I get a very beat-up envelope in a postal service baggy with a note stating it was damage in handling... it was my tenants check and it was postmarked on the 2nd...
Contact the landlord and make sure she received the check. Find out why she has not cashed it so that in future you can know when to panic.
It's the 18th and i just checked my on-line statement and the check has still not been cashed.
I called them two days ago and left a very polite message on their voice mail (i don't have their e-mail address) and said i just wanted to let them know that i noticed the check had not been cashed yet and wondered if they knew and said that i hoped it wasn't "lost in the system".
No response.
My landlords live 50 yards from the house i'm renting (i drop the check off at their house each month) and the bank is two miles down the road and they go into town daily.
Weird.
And it's rude that they don't call back and reassure me.

My landlord was hospitalized for several weeks and no one could get a hold of him... just saying there could be a very good explanation.

No, they're fine.
Like i said, their house is 50 yards away and i see them across the way on a regular basis.
I dunno. If it's not cashed by the end of this month, i'll insist i know what the status of the check is before i give them another one.

Well heck, you didn't say you see them all the time. How about a pleasant "hello, how are you today? By the way did you get my check cashed yet? I'd appreciate it if you could please as it throws my budget off." "Here's a chocolate chip cookie. Have a nice day..."
My tenants can call me if they have a question about anything. Communication is the foundation of a good tenancy for both parties.

Serious? And how long before you pay the owners?
We have a property management company but not as big as where you work for....but we deposit daily so we can pay the owners a.s.a.p. and also it is not fair to tenants who often live pay check to pay check and don't want to get surprised with a check withdraw weeks later...
