What is the normal procedure for renting a room is someone else's house/apartment? Like what information should I be expected to show or give to them, or sign?

For example, is it normal for them to ask to make a copy of my driver's license- stuff like that.

I'm looking for postings on Craigslist, is that a good idea?

If it were me, I would want the copy of the DL (make it ahead of time), copies of pay stubs for 6 months, and an in-depth personal interview. Maybe a questionnaire about personal habits (smoking, pets, hours at school/work, etc).

Where I live. we require a renters application to be filled out. 2 past pay stubs, and a copy of a drivers license.

We find all of our housemates on Craigslist and don't really have many problems. You can refer back to my past post on the renters forum for a detailed description. Anyway, it seems to work for us and as long as you are careful in choosing you shouldn't have a problem.

Just keep in mind that craigslist is full of people who are phising for email addresses. They create fake postings and fake emails to message you. All they do then is steal your email and use it to spam to. If I were you, I would create an email account JUST for answering to those posts to protect yourself.

P.S It might not be common but we require a facebook too.
