I've called my management company but couldn't quite get an exact answer except "it should", makes me feel like I need to speak with the owner of the company or something

I'm debating whether I should move into another complex within the same management company, now what happens to my current security deposit, can it roll over to the other apartment or do I pay another security deposit and wait for my current to be released?

What do most LL's do in this situation?

All depends on the relationship and unit condition as to speeding up the process... In my State, Security Deposit requirements are clearly specified... 21 days.

^^This.
Managing the inter-departmental transfer of deposit money, which might even need to be done with written checks (I've seen such) should be the easy part of moving. The dings to that number because of condition (inspect) or other reasons should be knowable a week or more in advance if needed.
