You have to cross out any barcodes. Barcodes tell the machines where to sort the mail to. And this mail is presorted to the carrier. And often redelivered.

Huge problem here that is correctable with a sharpie pen...
Make a small note and tape it in your box where the carrier can easily see it that says "No mail for "Oldtenant." Deliver "Newtenant" only." If the box opens from the rear for the carrier, you'll have to tape it towards the back of the box.
I still get mail from the people that lived here before us. I have lived at my current place for 5 years. I gave up on sending back the mail with " tenant no longer resides here" in big bold felt letters and hand delivering them to the mail man to just tossing em in the garbage now. I know I shouldn't, but after 5 years of the previous tenants mail, you would think they care enough to file a change of address.
Actually more than you would expect see moving as a way to put the past to rest...
Nine months ago a family moved about 80 miles away and they receive mail almost daily...
Important mail... mail that appears to include jury duty, Driver License Renewal, Bank Statements, etc...
I have no way to contact them since all the phone numbers are not active...
Every Monday I place all the mail, with address obliterated and a sticker that states: "Moved" in the mail box.
I never had a problem with the family and had hoped they would have stayed... also refunded their deposit in full.
Sometimes it just remains a mystery...
I still get an ocasional letter for a home owner that moved in 1969...
One had me laughing... it was a postcard which read... "Louis... it's been 34 years since your last dental checkup... please call to make your appointment today"
I had a similar issue, the post office said presorted mail (magazines, junk mail) can be tossed, things with actual postage has to be actually returned to the post office (mailbox or in person) with Return to Sender - Not at this address written on it. THrowing it away is a federal offense.
When I got mail for the last owner of my house and it was obviously bulk/junk/ads it went in the trash. If it in any way looked important, personal, official or businessy I just crossed off the address with a black marker (never had the barcode problem) and left it for the mail carrier. If they wouldn't take it I'd have dropped it in the big blue box...with the addy crossed out they can't redeliver it to you.
