I'd guess some place like North Dakota.. The cash I keep on hand just as a security blanket to live here in the Bay Area would BUY a house in Bismarck.

One in particular that I looked at was a one bedroom that went for $250 dollars a month.

That is because few people want to live there.

And it's not just rent, everything seems to be cheaper. I moved from California to Iowa on a job transfer. Before I left I was going to have a gold crown put in at the dentist's office. In California I would have paid $600 out of pocket, in Cedar Falls I paid $160 out of pocket. The dentist told me dental prices are so cheap there he has patients that come in from as far as Arizona to get their major work done.
Awww yes, the wonders of small town living. No jobs to speak of, certainly none that pay anything except for the "town families" (you know- the one or two familes that run EVERYTHING in the town), no doctors, no hospitals, lousy schools, bad tasting water and cops that love to write tickets for even 1 mph over the 20 MPH limit. Things have got better with Wal*Mart though. I remember as a kid, only a single store in many a town and you paid their price or you did without!

Default Not Santa Barbara

I live in a VERY inexpensive rental in Santa Barbara, CA. It is a 2 bedroom, 2 bath for $1200/mo. BUT, the same size apartment (# of bedrooms not sq footage) in town would cost at least $1800/mo and it would be listed as cozy (tiny). My sister owns a home she rents out and it is 2 bedroom one bath with a decent sized yard and she charges $2700/month and gets it no problem. Oh yeah, and the pay in Santa Barbara is super low for most. There are those with lots O'money and the rest of us. I work at a university and even though my town has one of the highest costs of living, our campus (out of 10) is the lowest paid. No big business to compare it to so our salaries have not risen much in years (sometimes we get a 1-3% increase in a year but that doesn't happen every year).

But, I do get to live in Santa Barbara which sometimes can feel like I am on vacation.

When I lived in Columbia MO we had a 2 br 1 1/2 ba apt that was well over 1000 sq ft and paid $450. Now that we live in the suburbs of Chicago we pay $1050 for a 1/1 that's less than 775 sq ft. When we live in the city next year for a similar apt in a desirable neighborhood we'll be paying $1300 or more.

But, I'm happy because I love where i live now, as opposed to where I used to live. It's worth it to me.

Right if the cost of living is cheap better believe the economy is horrible..and yes the crime maybe low but is there any type of entertainment or is it a boring place to live for cheap rent. I can tell you Cinti is ok you can get a 2 bedroom for around $750 in some areas but if you find a private owner you maybe able to get a 2 bedroom $550

I live in a small city in Illinois called Quincy (population about 40,000). I had a one bedroom apartment on a decent end of town for only $220 a month.

I paid $350 a month for a 2 bedroom apartment in Williston, ND in a very nice, quiet neighborhood close to the bank and grocery store.. and work....... and there are plenty of jobs there and they pay decently!!

I was salaried, but average in my hours and I made, on average $6.05 an hour as Morning drive on air talent and program director..... with 3 years expierience.............. yet the Taco restaurant in town (Taco John's) had a starting wage of.. $10/hr!
