If you need to/want to raise your rent, raise it. If they cannot afford the raise, they will move.

You are running a business, not a charity, why do you care if they get mad? I recently raised my prices on my products and service....yeah, a few regulars got mad, but they ended up coming back because our service/products are superior to the competition. It's business and I'm in business to make money, not give it away.

A lot of California landlords cared when their tenants got mad and got a bunch of local rent controls enacted.

I'm sufficiently angry that I'm voting for Democrats at the state level this year in the hope the statewide ban on rent control will be repealed.

In earlier threads you stated vehement opposition to Rent Control

The world need ditch diggers and porta pottie cleaners too. Don't cut yourself short. Honestly, if you can't affords the rents where you are, maybe you need to relocate to a place more suited for what you are instead of what you wish you were. There is nothing wrong with having to live in a slum if that is all your education and experience qualifies you to rent. Instead of complaining and trying to convince others you know what your talking about (do you really like being the butt of the jokes?), concentrate of make the most out of the life you made for yourself. Have yo notices that even some of the homeless under the 405 have made some pretty nice homes out of cardboard boxes and pallets? Maybe that's where you should be focusing.

he has spent his life drifting and just finding excuse after excuse as to why he has to remain a burger flipper . but now he feels he should be rewarded anyway by lowering standards or taking other peoples income away by charging him less than they deserve .

the fact is others in his situation succeeded because they were motivated and creative .

the words "don't cling to a mistake just because you spent lots of time making it " were never truer than with freemkt's financial life.

it isn't about education either . it is all about just being creative and finding the things others can't or won't do for themselves .

nothing personal but it is what it is when renters expect landlords to take less pay because their own income is to low . .
Its deeper than that...People feel entitled to their status quo. When their status quo gets disturbed, they get upset.

Example...A house that is owned by a quiet, childless older couple is sold to a family with three adolescent boys, and a Labrador, an outdoor basketball hoop and a trampoline. The neighbors, previously accustomed to the silence of a couple whose noisiest activity was their once a week lawn mowing, think of their new neighbors as the neighbors from hell, since they hear people outside flapping a basketball till 8:30 PM every night.

Same with a rent increase. Some people have extremely narrow focuses in this life.

Let's say current market value is $1800 a month, and you have been paying $1425.

And a NEW landlord takes over and charges $1800.

BUT, you are getting housing assistance so it wouldn't affect you that much. Would you roll with it, or cry foul?
No, I don't get mad if the rent goes up. I don't get a subsidy either. I either pay the higher rent or move.

This is such a great analogy! And in both rent increase and the above scenarios, the impacted people are faced with others' decisions that are perfectly legal and within normal perimeters. And the solution? The annoyed folks need to make their own decisions about how to manage this:

A. Oppose the rights of the "offenders"
B. Move to another location with the new found awareness that the present place no longer fits
C. Review and accept the new reality and make personal adjustments to them

I suggest the initial reaction is "A". But, our democratic (not socialist) society is focused on encouraging economic growth and rewarding those who achieve. And, in our system with our established beliefs, the reasonable response is either B or C.

Yes. Initially they might confront the new neighbors, call the police, etc...But the Police will come once and tell the neighbor that he isn't going to do anything about kids playing basketball, the parents will say "we'll try and watch it.." but their heart isn't in it.

So, most people learn to deal. Either they make the big choice to move, or they close their windows and screen door to not hear the kids playing.

But there are always those who will become monsters, on one side or the other.

So it is with renting; people realize that they can't afford to live in their neighborhood, or even metro area. And they move or make more money or take a roommate or occupy city hall.
