Hello Everyone, I am from California.

I have moved in to this apartment building about 4 months ago and today I realized after talking to a neighbor that in all that time landlord haven't cleaned the hallway or the stairs. Is there any laws(i couldn't find anything on google) that would dictate how often landlord have to have area cleaned? Do i have any legal recourse to breaking the lease or do I just close my eyes and deal with it? According to a neighbor tenant on our floor used to vacuum the hallway her self but recently moved out. We do have a manager in the building but all she does is collect rent and call for repair in emergency.

At the very least you can put in a maintenance request that the Landlord cleans the hallway if its dirty

You couldn’t find anything because there is no law, unless it rises to a habitability issue.

Move, complain or deal with it.

Maybe the manager is supposed to clean common areas. Write a letter to the owner/landlord and let them know the common area needs cleaning.

If tenants pick up after themselves, and do not throw papers on the floor, walk in with muddy shoes, and treat the common area with respect, it can stay clean for a very long time. 3+ months easily.

Until it's dangerous you just have to deal with it.

Was is not dirty when you moved in or was it dirty and you just assumed someone would clean it after you moved in?

What does the lease say? That's really the only room for much of anything to happen here. I agree with requesting maintenance as needed, but I don't think you'll get anything beyond that.

It was not that dirty, i have a feeling the tenant that used to do it her self did it right before we moved in and she maybe moved out. I don't know which unit she lived in. Unless it's super dirty hallway i generally assume it gets cleaned regularly.

Nothing, no wording about it at all. Only wording about cleaning is that apartment must be cleaned upon moving out for full deposit to be returned.
