I would do one of two things. Ignore it, or ensure there is a separate invoice for the repair and deduct it.

Are there any other options?

You're within your rights to deduct but I wouldn't if I had to paint anyway if that's the only 'damage'
I agree with this. It's just small patch job and painting. If the tenants had patched the holes themselves and did a crummy job, would the LL have been any happier? If that is it--I would give them back their deposit and let it go. If there is other damage--then consolidate in.

If the tenants hadn't put a hold in the wall to begin with it wouldn't be a discussion. Holes in walls aren't normal wear.

When I asked a contractor about this, they said they would lump everything - painting + patching up the holes - as one job. For $2400.

Maybe they are too lazy to itemize.

That's actually a good point. That was the main damage in the unit. I don't know if they would have even matched the original wall paint color, and I would have to have repainted the entire unit anyway (its due for a refresh anyway after 7 years).

Doubt it. More likely the additional involved is too small to worry over.

Maybe you can find some contractor to make a special 3 trip job out of just the wall repairs?
I bet that bill could add up quick.

Don't ask for it, require it. They can separate it out or not be considered for the job.

If the house is remaining a rental... I'll stick with the advice from the first page.
1) visit your properties more frequently than seven years
1a) ease up on otherwise solid long term tenants
2) set a piece of wood on the wall for tenants to mount the TV's to: hide the holes.
What do you mean by easing up on otherwise solid long-term tenants?
