I just got a new 32 inch flatscreen TV and cable service last month after 17 years without cable.
my electric bill without any AC so far (it's been below avg temps here in NY) was $72 which for me is high because i have a studio apt. i am assuming the tv and cable box are doing it but i'm not sure
when i got my apt 18 years ago the monthly electric bill was about $25. of course this was without internet or anything else. AC bills in the summer for a 13,000 BTU wall unit were about $85 per month
i got my first computer in 2001. bills without AC or cable box or new TV has been about $45 per month but as you can see it was $72.
I shut off my printer because i had been leaving it on
Electric hot water heater, ceiling fans, any entertainment thing that keeps a low current going through it-for memory or time or whatever, the refrigerator. Your coffee pot, cordless phones, your computer.
Electricity still goes through appliances like printers even when they're off. Keep appliances unplugged when you're not using them- even phone chargers!

what appliances use a lot of electricity?
A lot of this has to do with inflation and the value of the dollar rather than necessarily how much energy you're using. Utility costs could rise a lot over the next few years, so don't look at your bill and assume you're using more. It's likely just that the dollar is buying less.
Unfortunately there is no controlling the amount of money the federal government prints, so the unfortunate consequence is that things like energy cost more in terms of dollars. Supply and demand.
We've tried to shut down our computer/printer and just leave the phone on (we got a special light bar for this).
Our electric bill was 4 dollars HIGHER this month after doing it.
I know the appliances in this apartment are old and draining but they aren't going to change them.
Our fridge makes weird noises, the stove is old. (we do not have a washer or dryer). The dishwasher is inefficient and doesn't clean yet there is nothing they will do about it.
Renting sucks, seriously. You can't do any energy efficient planning.
By the way, a coffee maker uses a lot of electricity.
I don't know the details exactly but I have heard that the flat TVs use alot more electricity than the old types.
We have a 42" flatscreen LCD tv and the CNET ratings are pretty good, it should cost under $50 a year to run it. Many tvs (including ours) are energy star rated.
