A caveat to spouse or " significant other": It better be a good relationship. There are plenty of couples who aren't compatible, don't talk too much to each other, don't have anything in common, etc but remain married for one reason or another.

I'd rather have a good relationship with my spouse than all of the other things together.

I agree that having a spouse is not necessary. Having a good friend serves the same purpose.

One secret to a happy retirement is the ability to let go of things that might once have bothered us. All the kids are on their own, they can figure out things for themselves, friends who were problematic can be ignored, faults in oneself can be laughed off. The two relatives I had who lived to be over 100 were laughing at things right up to the last minute. Lesson, not to take things too seriously. Remain:
