If you have never been laid off from a good paying job - and have had to accept lower wages just to keep from starving - you have no dog in the game.
Agree.

Can we get back to the topic? We have the POC forum for discussing things like whether or not Walmart is an ethical employer.

I've read so many stories from mostly women who said they had great plans for retirement and how they would travel here and there, and then their husband died or one of them became very ill and unable to do all that.

I try not to take what I have for granted, but it can be difficult. We both retired early, we love where we live, and we love to travel the world. We travel a lot now because we never know what the future holds. Both of us are very healthy and very fit. We workout, we eat right, etc. So we still feel quite young. But the stories of others is sobering. No guarantees we'll remain healthy and fit in body and mind, so we're enjoying life and adventure right now. Today.

I have found a new approach to a healthy lifestyle and I finally have some hope of being able to get about. This could even mean taking some easy trips, and that for me would round out a pretty perfect retirement.

The problem with retirement/ lifestyle is mostly money, after health. There is never enough that matches the things you want to do, now that you have all the time in the world. I knew that would be my own calling card later in Life, so , I did all the things I wanted to do, when I was younger and usually in better health, both mind and body.
Now today in the sun setting years, I feel trapped, abused, unwanted, depressed, the list is long. Sure glad I did all those things, had all those adventures when I was in my 30s-40s. That lifestyle did hit home though, when I retired, and there was no money left.

If we're talking sheer fantasy, I think owning a condo on a cruise ship that just happens to also have excellent medical facilities on board would be a dream come true. If Pierce Brosnan is my friendly next door neighbor, even better.

If you want a more realistic dream situation, we want a town within 5 miles of a beach, in a mild climate zone, with an active senior center and with excellent medical care nearby. Having lots of museums or festivals nearby would be nice, too.

What's really great about doing the travel/adventure when you are retired is that you don't have to think about getting time off work. You just go. You can be impulsive.

One of the best things about our retirement is my husband wanted to volunteer and use his skills to train teachers. So we did. A 2 year adventure in Uganda. Loved it.

I'm not great with money but fortunately my dh is a good planner and prepared for retirement as soon as he began working.
