Funny, my husband is 70 and I am 57. We stopped receiving this kind of stuff some years ago, except during open enrollment period for Medicare supplements. Those we still get, and we're not changing from our excellent Part B plan with USAA.
Now that I think of it, the amount of junk mail we get has dramatically reduced over the past few years. Very little now-a-days. I'm sure the profit and loss statement for USPS will indicate the same. Using the mail is becoming a dinosaur.
If you think AARP, funeral, retirement home, etc. mail is creepy...how about those ads on webpages...the whole idea behind Google is to find out who you are and what you are interested in...and to follow you around with relevant ads...
There is tons of info about all of us for sale or even available for free. I get calls from job recruiters who buy lists of therapists licensed in my state...if you get a traffic ticket, within a few days your mailbox will be filled with brochures from traffic lawyers, who get lists of everyone who get tickets...I get letters from political groups asking for donations based on what political party I'm registered as affiliated with on my voter's registration....this is certainly nothing new, nor specific to AARP.
I've searched here and can't find anything, I've Googled as well (not sure if I'm using the correct term(s)?) - Anyway - how is that AARP KNOWS when someone will be turning 50? Do they pay the SSA? I, for one, am really annoyed about this - people know about AARP and can join if they wish - why do we get bombarded w/mail from them when they apparently know someones' age? I really feel that this is an invasion of privacy.
Google yourself. The world know who, where and how old you are.
The amount of data mining is digusting, but it is a sign of the times with no way to really protect yourself. Even the ACA is requires more data on patients, so how private are our medical records?
I don't like the authoritarian way Facebook requires data from their customers. I needed to use it to see photos a family member posts so I just made up things like my d.o.b.. It isn't any of their business to gather information about citizens. We get enough junk mail, with our name pre-printed on their return forms, which requires shredding. We had more privacy back in the good ol days of party telephone lines!

Yes, I've closed some of those ads, and they want me to fill out a survey and tell them what ads I prefer. I don't want any stinkin ads!!!
I recently bought an air conditioner, and for a couple weeks I got loads of ads popping up for air conditioners!
