Yeah, well rich people got that way with considerable input from society in terms of education, infrastructure, fire, police, etc. Somehow I don't feel sorry that they have to give back to the community out of their excess, so that others can have the bare necessities of life.
I wonder if it would be a good idea to put away hard assets like art work, physical gold and silver, etc in small amounts every month that wouldn't show up on the govt radar screen, so that if one does have everything taken away by medical costs or theft or scams, one would still have something to sell to keep going for a while .... or if you end up in a nursing home, you'd have the money for cannolis and coffee every day, and a bit of Viagra every now and then.
Are you saying that I am a liar? I didn't realize stating the truth of my foibles of youth were "spinning". Why would someone "spin" those reasons? So what do you assume "the truth" is of others who screwed up in life?
Huh?
I said, and I quote: "The stereotypical "on the street" response though is that those who did not retire wealthy (define that) didn't plan, squandered, lived for today, etc. It's a favorite spin that gets repeated often and couldn't be farther, in many cases, from the truth."
The "spin" is the accusation that any boomer who did not retire wealthy "didn't plan, squandered, lived for today, etc."
It's more like defending, rather than offending, you.
I think they do have to carry malpractice insurance. I agree that big pharma has its place in the USA medical cluftersuck. DH used to be a pharmaceutical salesman. He is well aware of the many levels on which big pharma is siphoning off people's money. The insurance industry is equally, if not more, guilty of this.
If you think this is the case, buy stock in those companies and reap the benefits.
I think all you have to do is send them a few miles north to Canada, I have Canadian friends and family who love their healthcare and lack of healthcare worries. No middle class Canadian family will go broke from medical bills.
And I have Canadian friends and relatives who are stuck in a system and wait long periods of time for minimal care.
Certainly there are a lot of people who have bad luck and circumstances. For every one of them there are 10 more who complain about how unfair life is. Healthcare is too expensive but they eat salt and grease and are 50 pounds overweight. There are no jobs because no one came knocking begging them to take the job of their dreams. They are not willing to sacrifice to get an education or learn a trade or move to an area that has jobs or to take a job they do not like or to start at a job where they are underpaid but can advance themselves through hard work. Somehow things would be better if they lived in Canada or Germany. Maybe life was unfair because their parents did not earn enough. Or sometimes they picked the wrong spouse, often more than once. It is always amazing that those who complain the loudest never seem to take responsibility. They complain but they are certainly not looking for ideas about living and doing things differently.

I apologize, neg. I guess I was in "defense mode" and couldn't see that. Sorry. Thank you.

Oh yeah, I can relate to having done that...twice! First one couldn't keep it in his pants, second one absconded with all the money in our savings and checking accounts.
I did find a wonder man who took all the crap I handed out to him from my past experiences until one day he broke and told me he was NOT those other jerks and if I couldn't see that by now, he wanted a divorce!! You better believe I changed my attitude. We had almost 20 years together. He was brought into my life to show me that there are some good eggs out there but I am quite content being his widow. I don't care how hard life is now without his paycheck, I never want another man in my life. I just don't trust them nor myself to make a good judgement call again. 1-3 is not very good odds!

The title of this thread is "How I screwed up before retirement".
If admitting that you had screwed up does not equate taking responsibility, I don't know what it takes to convince the critics !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

I can't figure that out either, Bella! This thread is supposed to be a place where we, who did screw up, can moan and groan to that fact. If someone doesn't like it, don't come here and DON'T respond.

Interesting you should say that. Just the other day, my sister who never made as much $ as I did, but who is married to a retired gov't employee who made big bucks and invested well, accused a friend of hers who is less well off that she married the wrong guy so it's her fault the woman isn't so well off. There are more women out there than anyone would admit to who are riding on the success coattails of their husbands (sometimes the other way around) and who put down others in less fortunate circumstances. Without their high-earning spouse they would be in sad straits indeed.

Some of the comments in this thread and other threads about poor retirees made me think of the quoted statement below from this link
The Washington Post’s Emily Badger ....wrote: “Much of our political rhetoric doesn’t simply disregard the poor, it actively disdains them. It treats them as takers, freeloaders, deadbeats. As morally weak and gleefully dependent. And like many narratives that are true in the rare anecdote but false on the whole, this one requires a whole lot of breathless storytelling.”
My observations is that there are a lot more understanding and compassion from the haves for the have-nots in REAL LIFE than what portrayed by the media and what displayed on line. It's much easier to rail against faceless/nameless people and to echo media's political rhetoric.
Here's hoping that participants of this retirement forum would at least thinking of other posters as acquaintances, not complete strangers and would not be to quick to judge or react negatively.
