I'm only 29, but if I were to retire I would do so right here in America. I would travel a lot but that would be the extent of it, no reason for me to live in another country. I never really had the desire.
To answer the question, if I did decide another country, tough to say. It could be Canada or some nation in Europe. I will not live in a developing country that is for sure.
When you move to another country you live by that country's rules. Your medical may not be covered. You may have to come back to the USA periodically to keep your US citizenship. You may need to learn their language.
When we first retired we were full time in Hawaii, which is of course the US, but is very different than the mainland. Now that we have grandkids, we're more back home, but still enjoy Hawaii. Unfortunately, some of the best friends we made have passed away and we're nor there enough to make new friends really.
I've spent a lot of time working overseas and did some research and countries i like and considered are:
Thailand - Very inexpensive, good food, warm year round, friendly people.
Chile - Excellent climate, excellent food and great wine, near 1st world in Santiago, significantly less expensive than comparable US cities.
Spain - 1st world country with excellent food and wine, relaxing lifestyle, excellent health care, less expnsive than USA, excellent climate.
Actually wife decided she doesn't want to live overseas. If I wasn't married and didn't have children and GC in the USA, I probably would live overseas at least until I was 65 and eligible for Medicare.
I'm currently living and working in Kuwait...not terrible but I certainly wouldn't be here if I wasn't working here.
