Who needs Medicare? You'd be able to get medical coverage if you lived in a country with socialized medicine available to all.
This thread is interesting. I know nothing of these countries mentioned, but I lived in Europe as a child and I know there is a nicer, cleaner, more welcoming environment out there than this country. I have long felt out of place in the U.S. And wished for an alternative lifestyle. I am poor and without means, so I am stuck here til I die, but I still have the dream of a better life.
Most advertised retirement destinations are not as good as they seem to be.
Living in a third world country isn't fun, especially when you don't speak their language.

Sometimes in life (usually) we are forced to do things that are not fun.
If you are a USA citizen with a terminal condition between ages 50 and 65, and not wealthy, employed, on LTC, or on state aid, you best be looking beyond the USA borders for a safe and secure place to live and die (available healthcare).
Like it or not.
Risk of leaving survivors impoverished in USA is very probable.
Cookie cutter foriegn retirement locations are not the plan / optimal solution. If a place has been discovered by consumer masses, it is likely too late to consider. Millions of people worldwide have used medical tourism for decades. (Often encouraged by their foriegn state healthcare plans.) You don't find these providers filled with USA patients, (yet) they are filled with patients from countries with state provided healhcare.
To me, USA preferred locations are already expensive. New residential developments along the safe coast lines are few and they start at high $.
That is why to me, living outside the US is becoming more of a necessity. I would have loved to be one of those who got a house early in the US when they were still building up the coast lines and oversupply has put prices in affordable reach.
The good thing is there are many other countries out there. Globalization at its finest!
The foreign country we're moving to for retirement is South Florida.
Get ready for tropical summer heat all year round, NY fast paced attitudes, high crime rates, a LOT of Haitians (learn Creole), and amongst the most expensive property taxes/homeowners insurance rates in the US.
The food is great there though, and the beaches are pretty nice, albeit crowded.

We're been going there in July and August for many years now so we know what to expect, and we'd rather sweat in July than shiver in January.
Also, after getting to know Miami/Dade I think we'll be heading for the Gulf Coast, which has less of the other stuff you mentioned. Still, Florida in general is not like anyplace else I've been to in the US.

I lived in Dade for a year & can heartily agree on the uniqueness of FL - a subtropical climate & the weirdest melange of people just about anywhere, a lot of eccentric characters. It's literally the end of the road, you either dig that or not.
I always felt it was the White Castle to California's McDonalds.
