Well you can save money on car insurance if you also allow them to put in a monitoring device.
It monitors speed, braking (hard, sudden, or rolling non braking) and I think mileage.
You can save 10-15% maybe more on your premium, so they say.
To the opposite, you won't save as much if you violate those things.
I asked our long time agent about it, specifically because we had just been to st Louis. The highway speeds there are 55-65 limits, with left hand exits. I can tell you NO ONE was going less than 80-90!!! There was also no side spots for a cop to sit to catch speeders, IF they could monitor.
The ONLY slow downs were for accident and once in the pouring rain one day.
I think he said you could file a trip that might result in abnormal habits, or unplug it for the trip.
Around here, though, he said we wouldn't have much problem s unless we drove erratic.
Not sure I want to be monitored. Spouse says no, and spouse is a more slower driver than I. I pointed out we may HAVE to opt in.
It plugs into your dash input module (or whatever it's called), which is on any vehicle made after at least 1995, I think it is.
When I shop around for car insurance, sure I can find a better price, but then when I want to combine it with homeowners insurance, sure they offer a break on car insurance, but DOUBLE what we currently pay for the house.
I haven't tried to shop independently for these, might find a savings there that way.
My theory is that insurance companies will lute you in with a much cheaper auto insurance to get you onboard, and by 3-5 years your back up in rates again.
Some do say shop every 3-5 years for car insurance.
I have also found that companies like Geico, which doesn't have local offices, CAN be difficult to get ahold of in case there is an accident.
Car insurance is minimal where I live. I don't pay very much and it's bi-annual. The biggest expense for me would be taxes and technology frills (internet, cell phone, computer anti-virus plans, security features, the list goes on).
We've had a low mileage discount (driving under 7,500 miles yearly) from State Farm for years. For the first couple of years, we had to take the car to our local agent once a year to verify the mileage. After that, they never asked again.
I would never allow the car monitoring even though we are careful drivers. It's feels too intrusive. We have great coverage at a low price, and for us, the monitoring wouldn't lower the cost enough to justify it. If I were looking to lower our price, I would do the safe driving course for a discount instead.
Fluffythewondercat, the only thing I could walk to would be a restaurant and a few little stores. But I live in town and things aren’t too far away. I have days that I don’t drive anywhere.
When I moved from the city down here to a rural county - insurance dropped in half!
Even though I was actually driving more due to the commute to work. But guess it was not safe in the big city. And yep my car did get stolen once out there.
