Went a couple of weeks ago with a friend. They were very helpful.

They did have to nicely shut her up when she started rattling off her situation to the first person we saw. It was kind of funny. I told her, she is just here to make sure you go see the right person - no need to start spilling your guts or paperwork all over the place.

I guess since I was in the military for so many years, kind of just sit and wait for them to tell you what you need.

One of my siblings had a cow because she said they wouldn't let her "talk". But it was the same scenario. You go to one window - tell them what you are there for - (not your whole life story) and then they assign you a case worker. Go back to the lobby and wait for them to call your name.

Sibling wouldn't shut up long enough for the window person to help her. So be patient and follow directions.

When I read this, I interpret it as you request a new check in person and they would process the request and mail you the new check. I would never think any government agency would cut checks on the spot.

No they wouldn't.

The friend I went with to the SS is going to have to pay her Medicare premium quarterly. She asked if she could pay there. They reluctantly said, you could drop it off, but we are going to mail it for you just as if you were going to do it yourself.

Colloquial terms such as "cut you a check" can mean different things to different people.

They stopped sending paper checks in March 2013. So this must have been quite some time ago.

I've had nothing but good to report about SS. There was one minor glitch that popped up recently, but it was fixed in one day with a local phone call. The people are courteous, and helpful.

I'd be impressed with s/s if they would stop paying people who have gambling addiction - plus do something about all those who abuse the system by lying about their disabilities.

My first encounter with a Social Security office was 3 years ago when I had to take over my mother's affairs. I made the mistake of going to an urban Social Security office. There was nobody anywhere near 65 in the room. It was stuffed full of people trying to scam SSDI. I had to wait several hours.

Wiser after that encounter, I've only ever used small town Social Security offices. Rutland, VT had one person in front of me. Concord, NH, I had to wait maybe 10 minutes.

I have been very fortunate in my dealings with both SS and my pension and IRA people.

The first time I needed to talk to SS, I spoke with a woman whose name was the same as mine. What a coincidence. And a second woman I spoke with was very kind and asked me about the two years my income fell to very low income. It helped that she wasn't critical or condemning, or judgemental. As has been said, "crap" happens and sometimes there is nothing you can do about it. But it sure affected my SS check. Which is is directly deposited to my bank. Best way to go, in my opinion.
