Preying on the elderly is despicable. The only time I lose my cool is when I get a call from some marketer with a scheme obviously intended to confuse an older person.

But for every case where people do it by breaking the law you've got thousands of others who do it perfectly legally. I'm talking about the basement dwellers who hang around under the excuse of helping out and slowly bleed ma and pa's bank account dry.

It scares me too. I'm making a bug-out plan to implement if these goons show up at my front door. They won't get in.

We need to also keep in mind that Parks and others like her pay healthcare and social workers for leads. They didn't just pick the Norths out of a hat.

Thank for sharing the news of some justice for the abusers in this case. That the enablers got away is still depressing.

Like TheShadow, we too are a childless couple. Furthermore, since both of us are immigrants to the US and do not have family here, it is likely that we will need to plan for a third-party guardian service. The potential for abuse in that situation is very scary.

This is an issue that should definitely be brought more to the attention of the general public -- and I think the AARP should be involved to make this kind of abuse illegal on a national scale.

It alarms me that I did not even know how prevalent cases like these are -- or might become if something isn't done about it.

I also agree that they should be kept in jail for a VERY long time; and in cases like this, it makes me wish they could be put to death IF death penalty cases did not cost a fortune in all the appeals, etc., that must take place. People like the perpetrators apparently have NO conscience and only make life miserable for others. In my opinion, they are no better than vermin.

GRRRR.
