From 68 to 78, I lived alone, no neighbors I could depend on, legally blind, so walked everywhere, did everything on my own, shopping, housekeeping, cooking, extremely frugal on SS.. From age 75, traveled to 40 countries independently and alone. No problems.

This thread is a little old but fwiw, at 71 I'm as strong and flexible as I've ever been. Don't do gym but exercise 4-5x a week (cardio, strength, yoga) at home, nothing hurts. Only supplement is magnesium.

I have a friend who rides with us on our Saturday morning rides. She is in her 80's. Mind you, she's not as fast as she used to be but, she's faster than the slow group of riders. In this year's senior games, she won 4 medals in cycling.

I want to be like Ann when I pass through my 70's into the 80's hence, I ride 3x a week and watch my weight. I'm only a mere youngster at almost 62 but, according to my cycling stats, I'm currently breaking records in certain segments that I set when I was in my mid-50's. I don't track these segments - I have no idea where they are and what my previous times were. I just ride and the new records pop up when the data is loaded into Garmin and Stava. I hope to maintain my speed & endurance at least for a few more years.

Good stuff!

At 71 I am able to do everything I want to do. I got a new hip at 70 so that makes me a little more mobile and less painful than in years past so I'm actually doing better. My blood pressure is managed and I'm off statins. I take supplements. I'm independent and live alone on 1+acre in the desert and have a suitable social circle and volunteer. I go fly fishing and enjoy photography. I'll be going to Ireland next spring and often travel by train or do road trips. And I have a cat.

Question for the women:
I get my physical once a year with my GP. I have not been to a gynecologist for many years, and am wondering if I need to see one as part of my physical. Recently a friend died from ovarian cancer.

I think it would matter if you had a family history of that type of thing

If I remember correctly my mother quit having those exams in her 60s after she had a bladder lift or whatever that is called. She just said she was done -

I'm am of the same thinking - done with that.

Is 70 the magic number?

I have siblings and friends that age that are now starting to "take care of themselves". What happened to their prior years?

I was in the military so had to run, jump, exercise, watch my weight etc. Is 70 too late to start?

I didn’t think you could detect ovarian cancer, it’s one of those silent cancer until it’s too late. But if you are high risk for ovarian cancer, then there are some screening tests.
