South Dakota is quite hassle free for a domicile, and yes, one overnight per lifetime wthl receipt will qualify for their non-resident / FT traveler domicile. I never stay in one spot long enough to trigger other state domiciles (which you need to assure).
The even more creative for low cost living use a sales tax free Montana LLC to own their vehicles, planes, boats. (Rules apply). Lifetime plates for vehicles over 11 years old saves a lot of hassle. No inspection, no renewal necessary.

That is very interesting.
a tutorial (RV living centric, but can work for those of us who are on the go without an RV lifestyle) including international with a USA domicile as base.
Lots of companies offering the MT LLC, but you can do yourself for <$100, but be aware of the strict rules and comply (insurance / ... avoiding fraudulant tax evasion...) You will note a lot of exotic cars and Motorhomes with MT plates and many jurisdictions (and neighbors) will be watching you. Our state offers a hotline to squeal on potentially fraudulent vehicle registrations. Just do what is correct and legal for your situation. I use registration in states where my vehicles are primarily garaged / used. I have nothing too expensive, (My daily driver is 47 yrs old and cost me $35) But for vehicles I intend on swapping / turning over in less that a yr I make it as simple, inexpensive, and quick as possible. At one time I had over 30 vehicles to run through a Dyno emission inspection annually, but my vehicles run on bio-fuel so there is no detectable emission. That got very expensive and laborious to comply and explain each time I tested, so I went 'Stealth'. (again / as usual)
