I had my stbx's 21 year old car in Scottsdale and he wanted it back. So I set out, headed for the Bay Area. Unfortunately I didn't make it any further than Wikieup.

Wikieup is a town of about 350 people in the Big Sandy Valley of Mohave County southeast of Kingman, AZ. Wikieup is home to five gas stations and two restaurants. It's a popular stop on the trip to and from Phoenix.

I pulled out of the Chevron station and ran over something. I believe it was a pulley fallen off this car. (It has one of those serpentine belts.) No power steering, the battery light on, I managed to limp back to the station. And now I'm spending the night in the car, 52 miles from Kingman. I'm going to try to get an Uber tomorrow, though I think that's unlikely.

Suggestions welcomed.

Fluffy, where would you take an Uber to, if you could get one?

Do you have AAA?

Won't help you now, but when I retired and moved to the northern Rockies, I knew I'd be doing some traveling and sprung for the AAA Premium. Expensive, but gives something like a 250 mile tow when needed. Thankfully, I haven't needed it yet.

If this is the TDI.... You get on the TDI website and find a first aid / mechanic referral. Tho... If is you spouse's regular vehicle, and they are familiar with it.. they can provide the best guidance..

Probably just a broken tensioner, so easily replaced as an assembly (as soon as you can locate one, and someone to replace it. If you have the part, maybe just a bolt vibrated out. Could take 4 hrs or 4 days. Sounds like it still runs... That's a good sign.

In small towns, usually they take care of each other, and will know who can drive you to nearest rental car location, or lend you their car!

Many car insurance companies offer emergency roadside assistance. The emergency number is on the back of my proof of insurance and the first 50 miles of towing are free. They may be able to help you get back to Phoenix as well as towing the vehicle. Wickenburg, the closest larger town to Phoenix, seems to have both Uber and Lyft per an internet search.

Yes, I agree with this for your best complete solution (If local fix-it-shop can't handle it).

Haul it back to PHX (140 miles) and hitch a ride with the tow truck driver.
It will cost you, but so will every other solution.

This will be simpler.
You will be home and car can be fixed and repair agency can fetch you when it's ready.

I suppose Fluffy could find a repair shop and a hotel in Wickenburg and wait for the repairs to be finished, and certainly in Surprise which is another 35 miles towards Phoenix. Kingman is much larger than Wickenburg and a little closer to Wickieup. But last year a friend and I wanted to take Amtrak to Kingman and then take Uber to Laughlin to gamble. We were told that Uber did not service that area. So I am skeptical of Kingman.

It looks like Wikieup is about 60 miles from Bullhead City. Call a tow truck to tow you to the city that has parts for your car. Ride with the driver.

Some of the tow co. also do repairs.

I always carried a spare serpentine belt.

I've always been a member of Good Sam Emergency Road Service. They never failed me.

Best of Luck to you, Fluffy.
Be Safe.

Call your insurance company. I once had a breakdown and did not have towing insurance, but they sent a tow truck for me anyway at my expense.

Yes, but if the car were towed, I would have to ride with the driver. I can't do that. Maybe I should have titled this Stranded High-Risk Senior.

It is very cold here and I can't run the engine.
