One caveat,
people in Flag do not consider giant chains like Target, HOme Depot, etc. to be good shopping and they fight hard to keep them out. Some have made it in, but you'd have to go outside city limits for most of them.

Flagstaff has too much winter for me and the cost of housing is supposedly high. Target I can live without but Home Depot or Lowes, no way.
Hmm..sounds like you have thought abotu a lot of places already. I'm going to agree with Buckhead Broker and say one of those online tools where you put in all your criteia is your best bet...
All the no-humidity, mild winter, not too hot summer places I can think of would be really expensive...(CA).
Unless of course you would consider Mexico!
ps--the big stores (including HOme Depot). are about 5 min. from downtown Flag...so not a drive.
Norm, believe it or not, I know a place that meets all of your criteria. And that place is: Reno or Sparks Nevada
It is high desert - low humidity - very mild winters - generally mild summers -- we had friends who lived there and said they rarely needed to use the air conditioning. Everyone who posts about Reno on the Nevada boards says the same thing -- they may get a little snow in the AM but it is usually gone by 11AM or noon
The area has several hospitals and medical centers. If you needed more than what they offer, sacramento is just a couple of hours away and San Francisco is about 4 hours
They have a university -- reduced fees for senior citizens
We've been there many times and it is #1 on our retirement list -- diverse population -- Republican congressman, but I read articles about him and he is called a liberal by other politicians
Reno has decent-sized airport
I believe they have all of the stores you mentioned (someone correct me if I'm wrong)
Yes, I checked for housing between $200,000 and $250,000 and there were many single family homes available in that price range. Check www.realtor.com (broken link)
No state tax, and I am told (again, someone correct me if I'm wrong) that property taxes are 1% of the selling price of the house
There are at least 3 Jewish places of worship
Don't worry about the casinos if you don't gamble -- you don't have to go to them if you don't want -- lots of people who live there never go to the casinos
We've visited Las Cruces but found it was too hot in the summer, and not enough nearby to keep us interested. Reno will provide us with a home base so we can spend a few years exploring the beautiful Northwest. Some housing is expensive, but more is now available in your price range.
Liveable humidity level (very important for health reasons).
Mild winters.
Near a city with a college (for cultural events).
Good medical facilities nearby.
Not too conservative.
Religious diversity. We are non practicing Jews but obviously would not want to live where Jews are discriminated against.
Within easy driving distance of an airport.
Good shopping i.e. Lowes or Home Depot, Dept. Stores, Target, etc.
Decent restaurants.
Houses below $250,000.
Reasonable taxes.
It's been a couple of days since I've been on this thread, but I did want to add some comments.
I'm not sure where you live currently. Yes, if North Carolina and Virginia are too humid for you, generally speaking, the cost of living gets prohibitive if you move further north on the East Coast. I was beginning to think that you should look to the West.
While it may not meet your "mild winters" criterion, have you considered the greater Denver area? This city and its surrounding communities should fit in nicely with everything else you're looking for.
I am retired and my wife will be retiring in the next few years at which time we plan on moving away from the NYC area. I would like to know if there is an area that meets our requirement or at least most of them.

Our list had a number of those items and a few more. We spent more than a year visiting sites and settled in Vancouver Washington.

Check out the Cumberland Plateau area in TN. Cookeville in particular. We bought a retirement lot in Fairfield Glade (Crossville), which is east of, and smaller than, Cookeville. Not sure about the Jewish community, but the rest of it might just fit. Not that far from Nashville, I don't think the humidity is as bad as western TN because the plateau has a unique weather system. Warmer winters cooler, drier summers than the lower elevations. I believe there is a college there.
Fairfield Glade is nice, but might a little shy on a couple of your requirements. College for one. It is about an hour from downtown Knoxville, but flying out of Knoxville is more expensive than Nashville.
Good luck! Check out the TN forum on CD.
