Violent crime overall is flat vs. last year. And violent crime overall is down vs. the five year average. So says the Providence Police. And violent crime overall is the subject of the thread. Your thread, but you don’t even understand that.
If you had wanted to claim that Providence homicides are up, or that Providence aggravated assaults are up, then you should have been smart enough to make either of those the subject of this thread. But, you weren’t. Embarrassing for you, but not my problem. And that you don’t understand or recognize this, while claiming to be a crime expert, is hilarious.
Those who are accusing me of manipulating the data are clueless. The data is right on the PPD site, and the reader can have a look and decide for themselves. It shows that overall, violent crime was flat for the last year. It also shows that it was down when compared with five year averages. That's the truth.

Spoiler
AGAIN, serious violent crime is UP over last year. That means higher. More. Less safe. That you continue to brush that off while focusing on the five year average (which is skewed by an especially violent 2021, for one), is nothing short of BLATANT DECEPTION on your part. It happens to be something you aren't very good at, and any half tuned in reader should be able to see right through.
This thread is a live discussion of violent crime in Providence, short term trends are very much on topic. You and your comrade's ongoing attempts to downplay crime in Providence and mock those discussing concerning news and stats, is not only a harmful practice but an embarrassment to the forum.
My takeaways - nobody should be thrilled about the YoY increase in homicide or the slight increase in aggravated assault. That said, they're not cause for panic either. The homicide numbers are equal to or lower than 3 of the previous 5 years. The aggravated assault increase is slight, and it's still lower than each of the previous 5 years except for 2022. Robberies continue to decline, as does nonviolent property crime - both of which are good trends. The murder and aggravated assault numbers don't constitute "trends" yet, but bear watching long term.

No you two are THE embarrassment to this forum. If anyone listened to you, I'd consider you harmful. As it is, your violent crime fearmongering is still over the top & indicates a pathologic crime fetish.

Yes, I linked that same data, which earned me the crime fetishers’ “data manipulation” merit badge.
As you know, trends are measured over longer periods of time. Nobody is claiming an increase in homicides, for instance, in 2023 vs 2022, is a good thing, but 2022 had significantly fewer homicides than longer term averages, so something of a bounce back toward the mean isn’t unexpected.
