I moved from Providence in 1980 and am planning a return visit in August 2009. I've noticed many changes have come across the path since my departure. One of the things I'm interested in is the discovery of a mural painted on the walls of the Providence City Hall. When I left they were trying to restore it. Was it ever fully restored and if so can anyone give me more info?

Providence City Hall went through a major restoration in the 1970s. Here's a website with photos....

Thanks for the connection. It was extremely helpful. The city has grown and changed since I was there. Many of my old stomping grounds have changed their appearance but are still recognizable. The New York System on Cranston St. and Onlneyville Sq were great eats. Rocky Point bit the dust and I was sure looking forward to some great chowder and clamcakes. It will be fun to check it all out. Thanks.

^Most people will say Prov. has vastly improved (I'm in agreement), but nostalgia can make you feel differently. I think it's done a fantastic job of transforming and you'll enjoy returning greatly. I spent a few years living on and my entire family grew up on George St. on the East Side. That's one place that's changed very little (Brown owns more of the homes now though). Thayer is still Thayer and places like Antonio's and Andrea's are still there and it's just as pretty and fun to walk.

Enjoy your trip back!

I've noticed a great change in the downtown. I left in 1980 justas the jewelry industry was starting to take a beating and companies were folding. I left a job as a mold-maker at Spiedel on Ship St.. I lived close to Federal Hill and loved the Italian cuisine there. The thing I always loved about RI was the food and the variety of cuisines. Great food everywhere. I was sad to hear that Rocky Point hit the curb , but I have the recipe for their Clam Chowder and Cakes A majority of places I used to go to are still there, so life isn't all change. I'll be bringing my in-laws and it will be their first visit to New England. My mother-in-law is really excited about it. Should be great for all. Two stops I'll be making are to John's New York System on Cranston St. and the Olneyville New York System in Olneyville.

The original NY System is still on Smith St- might be safer than Cranston St or Olneyville.
