Puerto Ricans in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Does that sound about right? 23.56% of the Providence population is Puerto Rican? Does it have a distrinct Puerto Rican feel as well?

Hispanic populations in Providence, along with other minority populations, are concentrated in the south and west ends of the city, many moving into former multi-tenant mill worker housing available there.

Other parts of the city, such as the East Side, have very few. I live on the East Side and, on a daily basis, I see few Hispanics of any country of origin with the exception of lawn crews. Does downtown Providence have a PR flavor? No. If anything, it has an Italian flair thanks to previous Mayor Cianci.

Many immigrants have settled into the above parts of the city for service and factory work and are now finding there is none- so one might expect to see that population declining or certainly not increasing. Also, RI has done some cracking down on illegal immigrants, although many would say not nearly enough.

I don't think Puerto Ricans are illegal immigrants, being as PR is a territory of the US.

This website states that 7.3% of the population of Providence is Puerto Rican.

talking about hispanic culture in general in the city. If people read the full post she talked about more than just Puerto Rican, there is a large Guatemalan, Dominican, Colombian, and to a smaller extent Mexican populations in Providence.

Don't forget the Cape Verdian immigrant population, one of the oldest immigrant populations in the US and numbering about 16,000 in RI.

I don't know if Portuguese speakers are within the umbrella of the term hispanic, but I think so.

But again it was about puerto ricans, not mexicans illegals, honduras problems or Chavez threatening the u.s.

Once again, my comments were not totally about Puerto Ricans- sorry if you did not interpret my post that way.

I think we have now established that Puerto Ricans are NOT a quarter of the population of the Providence, but that there are many other people of Hispanic origin.

It appears the headline of this thread is very misleading to the casual browser.
