We had two shooting here in the west end and it's only a few blocks away from the armory.

On first thought it sounds like a good deal but the close proximity to a bit more 'unsavory' areas would worry me a little. Even though it's not easy for landlords to get places rented at the moment 950 bucks for a nice loft with everything included sounds like there's a catch somewhere. Not sure, gut feeling says keep looking.

Pearly girl--If you live in North Providence I would STRONGLY suggest you get the address and drive by. I am looking for rentals in Providence and I would never live in certain areas around the Armory. There are homes that are dumps, boarded up, trash all over the place (not the people--actual sofas, mattresses, etc). When a T-mobile has to have bars on their windows it makes you go hmmmmm. These areas could be really nice with a little maintenance and upkeep--even if you are renting you normally try and plant a couple of flowers or have some cute stuff on your porch. However it seemed as if no one cared at all and just let their houses become completely run down. Either that or everything is stolen off the front porch, so they don't put anything out anymore---just my assumption, not a fact.
As for crime, I really have no idea because I only drove through, but you should check out specific crime statistics in the neighborhood. You can check out this city-data website or you can check Providence Police department at providencepolice dot com backslash stats dot html.
Good luck!

P. S. Make sure you are not giving them any of your information or sending them money in advance or wiring them money somewhere. You know what mom used to always say--if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

The Armory district is a great place to live. It has much to offer--the park, farmer's market, great restaurants, and a much better sense of community than you find in most areas. I'd rather live here than any other part of Providence...

I want to say that after living here for a year.... ALL of the above responses are correct.

It is within a mile of alot of crime...there were a couple shootings on this end of town this year, arsons etc. None of it disturbed our living. Its kind of like a little oasis actually....our street at least. I wouldnt want to live maybe a few streets in either direction, but you'd never know those things happened within a mile of our house. People are always safely jogging and walking their dogs around here even in the middle of the night....most of my neighbors are artists, JWU students, gay couples, latino families with children. We recently had a nice community yard sale. Everyones really friendly around here actually... And its much quieter than North Providence.

There ARE homes that are boarded up dumps, but alot of the homes are nicely painted restored victorians. Most of the homes on our block are from the 1800', and most of the people take care of their property.

So overall i'd really recommend it, unless you're really afraid of the things you hear on the news that happen a mile or so down the road.

This is exactly the kind of experience that makes sense for this area. There are these little oases of calm in the Armory but the on-the-ground experience of the actual crime or violence usually leaves people pleasantly surprised.

I actually drive to the Dexter Training Ground to walk my dog and while walking around in any city at night alone is not a wise idea, I feel safer in the Armory dog park with my dog than I do walking around on the streets where I actually live in Mount Pleasant...

my husband and I were in the armory neighborhood yesterday and my advice is RUN!!!! It was pretty bad during the day, I cant imagine what goes on at night. The lady whose apartment was for rent told me she was having an extremely hard time renting it out. I also wouldnt take a house for free there, and thats something I never thought Id say. Its such a shame because the old Victorians are amazing, Must have been awesome in its day.

I should have listened to my father in the mid-80's and bought a house there for about $15K. I was living large in NYC at the time and wouldn't listen to him. There were incredible deals off of Union. Oh well ... you live, you learn. Don't know how it is now, but I would imagine it's not too bad. But then, I don't live in PVD, so your mileage may vary. And, as madysonz says, the Victorians there are amazing, particularly around Dexter Field.

pearlygirl911, I'm wondering if you're still in the Armory District. Looking to move that way, & wondering if the areas surrounding your "oasis" have improved? I hear good things, but have teens who will want to be wandering around a bit....
