I have been browsing these forums for a while now and I think for the most part they are helpful.

Here's my situation I am a single 26yr male moving to Richmond this summer to start working at VCU hospital. Talking to friends and contacts, I have decided to either live in the shockie slip/bottom or the fan.

I wanted to hear locals opinion on which is better for social scene, bars, clubs, shopping, Safety! price isn't a issue

Specific apartments and/or lofts recommendations in either area would be helpful as well. Thanks for everyone's help.

Can't compare the areas, but in Shockoe Bottom look at Pohlig Box Factor and Lucky Strike Lofts.

the fan and carytown are nice areas but there might be too many college students there for your taste. i dont know what your preferences are like but i'm 24 and i get annoyed by college students. i live in the shockoe bottom area- it might be a little too close to the "bad" parts of richmond on the east side but i haven't had any problems as its usually pretty segregated. we have a few homeless people who hang around but most of the lower income residents on the east side don't cross over into shockoe bottom. shockoe slip is prob a good choice- lots of med students and young professionals. there are tons of apartment complexes. if i could live anywhere in richmond without worrying about price i'd live in one of the nice condos along the river

Why don't you rent a place at Vistas on the James? On a nice day you could walk to VCUHS which is about 5 or 6 blocks away.

Thanks for the responses! I'll look into the vista and other apartment complexes downtown.
