Having read Vanyali's other posts, and having lived in several rentals in the city, I have to say I think her experience is not the norm. I have family in Raleigh, as well, and there are plenty of rough areas in the Triangle, as well. I hope you'll read the positive posts about Richmond and keep an open mind. There are plenty of us who don't want to live with rats our termites and are very happy here. If you live around any large urban university you will see college students doing stupid things. If you don't want to see that, don't live there. Urban living is urban living, you have a more transient population because of the need for mass transit, walkability, etc. That's why a lot of us recommend against actually living in the city and taking the very short drive from the burbs to enjoy the amenities. I wouldn't discourage you from looking at the Triangle, it may be just right for your family. But I hope vanyali's negative posts won't color your impression over all the positive posts.

Thanks for your reply! I am still thinking about the Richmond area. In the end it all depends on where my husband finds a job. He has a lot more options in the Triangle area which is why it is probably a better fit for our family.
