I have some questions I was hoping to get answered. In June I am relocating my family to the Richmond area, more specifically Midlothian vicinity. My questions are about the job market. I am have an associates in Accounting and am currently obtaining my BA in Business with a concentration in accounting. My wife has her degree in healthcare administration.

What are the best networks to look for jobs? Obvious monster, indeed and career builder but outside of the norm are their any specific companies in this demographic that could help? Anyone on this board who can point me in the right direction?

We are going to rent for the first year just so when we buy we're more familiar. With that said what is the avg cost of living for a family of 4 if we're paying approximately 12-1400 on rent?

Thanks in advance!

Your question is a little vague and hard to answer.

I might be able to live on $70K with a family of 4 and rent of $1200 while someone else might scrape by making $100K. Depends on child care expenses, existence of car loans, student loans, etc.

Virginia's tax burden is in the middle of the 50 states. If you're coming from the NE you will think taxes are cheap. If you're coming from TX or FL, you'll think they are expensive. Utilities costs (water, gas, electric) seem reasonable to me. Gas is fairly cheap. Midlothian is one of the more expensive suburbs.

I apologize for being vague. I do appreciate the response. I was mainly wondering about the job market! I know some people have landed jobs before they moved to town, and I was wondering how they do that.

We are coming from the North East and our kids are in 6th and 4th grade so child care isn't a concern.

Thanks

Well then you should find a nice reduction in your tax burden without a decrease in the quality of education. Midlothian has excellent schools.

The Richmond job market is okay. I'm not sure about your specific fields. It's always easier to get a job with a local address, though.

No, I mean I haven't looked for jobs in the accounting field : )

Lots of big companies in Richmond (Capital One, Genworth, Philip Morris). Plus the state government is obviously here. I would think an accountant could always find a job.

I'm very familiar with labor market statistics and Richmond isn't doing as well as the state as a whole, but that's because Nova skews everything. I think overall the job market is becoming more diversified.

If your spouse is in healthcare administration, I would perhaps focus on her position, as it is a little more specialized. Some of the big medical systems in the area are VCU, HCA and Bon Secours. You may want to go directly to their websites, versus third-party.

My husband likes working for Bon Secours. I agree that's a great place to start.
