I'm an actor who is considering a move to Richmond some time next year. I'm probably going to try to sublet with someone who is already there. A friend of mine lives in south side Richmond and says that it isn't so bad in some locations...

So now I ask: what areas of south side Richmond would you say are decently safe??

I don't know where anywhere is safe on Southside. Since your an actor. You will be near Byrd park. Stay away. Always go with a group of people because there are a alot of gang violence near there

What? Why would being an actor mean that they would be near Byrd Park? Byrd Park is north of the river and I don't think of it as being unsafe.

"alot of gang violence"....in Byrd Park? It's not the safest area of the entire city, but Byrd Park is hardly a place with lots of "gang violence".

OP - It would be good to know why you want to be on the Southside. Is there a theater or location you need to be close to? There are safe areas of Southside, but IMHO, the north side of the river provides so much more, including proximity to most of the prominent theaters and artistic venues of the city.

What you need to define is what YOU are considering Southside. I'm not from here originally but have always been amused by how the lines are so blured. People that do NOT live in Richmond claiming Richmond because of the post office having their lines drawn weird etc. I have met MANY who live in Chesterfield / Midlothian but if asked they live in "Southside". While I also know people who actually do live in Southside Richmond who think it's hilarious that people over the do that.

To ME

Southside = Southside Richmond, which Richmond meaning RICHMOND
Chesterfield / Midlo I do NOT consider Southside

Not sure if it's a generational thing or what but somebody could tell you about a nice area in Southside and be referring to Chesterfield, Midlothian isn't a "real" town and is still Chesterfield but I just consider it it's own thing just the same.

I live in Midlothian and usually just say I live in Midlo but do consider myself southside.

As far as Richmond city "Southside" south side of river. I would choose Westover Hills area - it is a safe area with decent amenities and just across nickel bridge from the fan.

There are lots of safe areas in south Richmond. Most of it is safe, actually, unless you are near Jefferson Davis or south of Midlothian and north/east of the train tracks - the chesterfield county side of the tracks, which used to be part of chesterfield, Is fine.

If you go far enough west in south Richmond you can pay a million dollars for a house, and the area is in no way bad.

Byrd park has very low crime, and is not in south side. It's also one specific neighborhood that borders the park known as Byrd park, the others being carillon (totally safe) and Randolph (not that sketchy, but a little sketchy)
