I do have a bit of good news for you. Richmond has the Flying Squirrels, a AA minor league club affiliated with the Giants. We love our Squirrels and you can watch good baseball for a fraction of what it would cost to see a major league game. The Washington Nationals are two hours north of Midlothian and you can catch the Giants when they are in DC. The Nationals also televise all their games on MASN in the Richmond area.

So true... but the jobs here are lousy. Salary about half of what you would make in Northern Virginia.

If you don't have to work, this is a great place... if you need to work, prepare yourself for a large pay cut.

Prepare to slow down... things move a bit slower here too, which is not a bad thing!

Oh, gosh. Lots and lots of people have good jobs in the area. Median household income in my CDP (Census designated place) is about $150,000. Average wages in Richmond are about 25-30% lower than Northern VA and purchasing power is slightly lower. I'll give up some purchasing power not to have to sit in endless traffic.

Also, remember wages very much depends on your occupation and what industry you work in. People do move here from NoVa (and other high CoL areas) without taking pay cuts.

All that said, I wouldn't move back to NoVa if my life depended on it.

How do you think the pay is for professionals in IT in the Richmond area and do you have any idea what the market is like for IT folks?

We just moved from Alexandria to Midlothian two months ago. Family of four, kids are 1 and 5. Got sick of the beltway grind.

We're in the Roxshire subdivision and it's exactly what you're looking for. Great school pyramid, half-acre partially wooded lots, friendly and private. houses in the 2,100 to 3,000 sq foot range, from the low 300s to the mid 400s.

Thanks!

We are enjoying it indeed. Everything's 15 minutes away, folks are friendly, all the nearby parents seem to love Robious, and we live in a house we could never afford up in Alexandria.
